Is that really fair to the Irish?

I wonder if India would be interested in a trade.

Now this is more along the lines of what I would have imagined. Texas all by itself worth Canada...not buying it. We may bestride the economic world like a colossus, but not like five colossi.

Is that GDP per capita, or total? Because per capita would be more interesting.

Gonerill disagrees.

A per capita map would show how much a state is doing with its wealth, though. For example, if California has the same GDP as Canada, it also has pretty much the same per capita GDP as Canada, because they're roughly the same population. I'd be interested to know if there are states that are like the oil states of the middle east, say -- not so rich overall, but scandalously rich per capita. Or states rich overall, but not making the most of their human capital.

Oh, I know, I missed the original conversation and maybe it wasn't supposed to be serious anyway.

15: Yeah, they show different things. Heck, we could make a population map too, and squish the US into China & India multiple times, etc...

Or a map showing the states' comparable country Gini coefficients on income. Or a map showing the states' per capita spending on social welfare.

I remember seeing a map that a rural storekeeper had cut out and posted on his cash register. It boasted of Bush's "landslide" victory in 2000, by comparing the acreage of red states to the acreage of blue states.

I didn't want him to get away with that bullshit so I narrowed my eyes menacingly while buying my diet coke.

The ones that surprise me:

Missouri = Hong Kong -- one little city-state, wow.
Wisconsin = Portugal -- not very impressive for a Western European country that has been independent for something like 800 years.
Utah = Kuwait -- Oil isn't worth quite as much as I thought.
Kansas = New Zealand -- Neither is sheep, cows, fruit and movie production facilities.
