I wonder if India would be interested in a trade.
Already wrote you one song you're not getting another.
I love Turkmenistan for Emersonia.
You bicoastal elites are so ignorant of geography.
This is why we think we can deport your people even if they naturalize.
I know the difference, dammit! Innocent mistake! I have passport!
-gg-d probably calls Jack Daniels "bourbon", too.
Sweet. Does this mean if we bomb Iran, we'll hit Glenn Reynolds?
Now this is more along the lines of what I would have imagined. Texas all by itself worth Canada...not buying it. We may bestride the economic world like a colossus, but not like five colossi.
Is that GDP per capita, or total? Because per capita would be more interesting.
Because per capita would be more interesting.
Gonerill disagrees.
A per capita map would show how much a state is doing with its wealth, though. For example, if California has the same GDP as Canada, it also has pretty much the same per capita GDP as Canada, because they're roughly the same population. I'd be interested to know if there are states that are like the oil states of the middle east, say -- not so rich overall, but scandalously rich per capita. Or states rich overall, but not making the most of their human capital.
Oh, I know, I missed the original conversation and maybe it wasn't supposed to be serious anyway.
15: Yeah, they show different things. Heck, we could make a population map too, and squish the US into China & India multiple times, etc...
Or a map showing the states' comparable country Gini coefficients on income. Or a map showing the states' per capita spending on social welfare.

Not a lot of surprises in that list.
I remember seeing a map that a rural storekeeper had cut out and posted on his cash register. It boasted of Bush's "landslide" victory in 2000, by comparing the acreage of red states to the acreage of blue states.
I didn't want him to get away with that bullshit so I narrowed my eyes menacingly while buying my diet coke.
20: there are of course these maps, which you've probably seen, which address that point.
23: Looking at the county maps, it's really striking how almost all of the (few) counties in the West that voted Democratic have large minority populations.
23: The best part of that cartogram is that California appears to be projectile vomiting.
23: Along the same lines, I also like it when they distort the human body by sensory nerve endings, so that it's drawn with giant finger tips and lips and a tiny back.
28: Shouldn't the schlong be bigger?
Exactly! Doesn't her vagina look bizarre when you account for nerve endings?
Woot! We've been downgraded from a not-too-unpleasant authoritarian city-state to a deeply unpleasant military-theocracy!
The ones that surprise me:
Missouri = Hong Kong -- one little city-state, wow.
Wisconsin = Portugal -- not very impressive for a Western European country that has been independent for something like 800 years.
Utah = Kuwait -- Oil isn't worth quite as much as I thought.
Kansas = New Zealand -- Neither is sheep, cows, fruit and movie production facilities.
Hey! you forgot Po-!....oh, wait; there it is.
