Okay, now I have to comment just to check this thing out -- to think, technology to make the squandering of my time more efficient!
Thanks, Di -- I didn't want to be the first.
Preemptive apologies: this thing is likely to break. Fortunately it's Friday and I don't really feel like doing substantive work anyway.
Very cool, Tom. I may now have half a chance at keeping up!

Maybe this will lead to higher quality threads. Stop IM-spamming me, Timbot.
If you'd just accept that our love was meant to be, I would.
This can only lead to disaster and procrastination.
You're violating the sanctity of the off-blog communication. And that's not all!
Tom, you're a genius. I'm impressed not only by the technical achievement, but by the commitment to procrastination required to do something like this.
I guess this is topical here: Can the resident wizard cocksuckers here add a link "Respond to this comment" at the bottom of each comment that inserts both the number and a link to the original post at the top of the response? And while I'm at it, how about automatically adding a "target=_blank" to all outgoing links?

I used to do this at my site and got many heated complaints about it.
Ooo, that would be sweet. I have wondered about asking for exactly that, but don't have the face to ask for programming work given that I'm not going to do any.
I ended up putting a checkbox at the top of my blog that would allow users to select whether links would open in a new page or not. And comity was achieved.
16: I'm no web coder, but most of this sort of stuff is straightforward so unless I'm missing something I think this should be. Who amongst you does that bit?

Use the permalink at the bottom of the comment to which you want to respond to open a new tab, copy, and paste. Problem solved.

That's because taking control out of the user's hands pisses a lot of people off. (And by "a lot of people", I mean "me".) Same deal with automatically resizing browser windows (or creating new windows that can't be resized). Let me fucking decide how I want to run my browser.

You a sys admin in your day job? I know how to create a backlink from the permalink if need be, but given that the fraction of responses that refer to the original comment by number is somewhere around 50% and the fraction that actually provides a backlink is about 0.0001%, I thought that this might be a neat feature to have, and esp. one that doesn't require a lot of coding to implement.
This technology, like nuclear weapons and accordions, can only be used for evil.
What was that about the accordion?
Wow. Tom: you're my hero. You must, like, live in apo's pocket.
