if you're diagnosed with cancer, be sure to get a second opinion at a major cancer center.
We actually did this; my mom's sister, who lives in Houston, knows some people at M. D. Anderson, so we talked to someone there soon after my dad was diagnosed. It didn't change what we ended up doing, but it was still worthwhile.

This is depressing me as I wait to hear if the eye problem my dad has had over the last few days means that his cancer has recurred. (He's just spent a year in hospital recovering from a post-operative stroke after they removed a growth between his eye and brain, and is still not fully recovered.) Anyhow, it's a small country and his cancer is incredibly rare so we're just not going to get somebody who has experience treating it specifically. That said his doctors seem pretty good.
