And teh hero is back! The Chief just rules.
"The Chief stole the show. I've seen him Get Low and Tootsie Roll, but I didn't think he had it in him."
I listed to WKYS (tha PEOPLE'S STATION! I vote yes KYS Mr. Voice Man!) on my commute home from Tyson's every day for like three years, which means that any mention of Eastern Motors gets their goddamn jingle stuck in my head for days. Thanks, Apo. (Are you listenin', man?)
You're welcome, snarkout. It's a small world after all, it's a small, small world.
The trifecta of homemade District ads: Eastern Motors ("Where your job's your credit"), Montgomery Flea Market ("It's just like, it's just like, a mini, mall"), and Shoe City ("It's your city, it's my city, it's our city, it's Shoe City"). That last one might be the jangliest of all of them, too bad I can't find it online.
Oh, Apostropher, you bad, bad man. Fortunately, this Akrobatik should drive your poisonous earworms away.
Bwa ha, Spaq and I are here at the office and I got through only the first syllable of "Eastern Motors" before he was singing along.
I can't remember if you're a DC native, 'smasher, but there's also the television jingle for Joon Ri which ran constantly during Saturday morning cartoons in the mid-80s. ("When you take Joon Ri self defense/Then you too can say/'Nobody bothers me!/Nobody bothers me!'/Joon Ri means might for right!")
There's also the estimable Senate Auto Insurance--"Kiss My Bumper! That's Right, Jussssssssst Kiss It! Ha Ha Ha"
yes KYS Mr. Voice Man
Morning is much, much better IMO. Russ Parr is personally grating, but the program that either he or the people who employ him put together is often really interesting listening. At least 2 of the horoscopes are consistently funny, 1 or 2 days/weekly there is something that makes me change the station, but it's often rhetorically sophisticated staged talk. Goffman in _Forms of Talk_ is very interesting on radio speech, and Parr is realy good at it.
Nothing beat Dennis Owens in the mornings in DC. What a sublimely odd man.
13: Funny. Not really related, but the end of that commercial reminded me of this, and would somebody please steal that child for me?
14: aren't your hands pretty full with the three you have already?
I don't know that one, snarkout. I've lived here for about 5 years, but I'm from Tejas originally. I might not have mentioned that before here.
Damnit, snarkout. I had managed to forget that for years.
I had managed to forget that for years.
I just lost the game!
This DCist post on Count Gore De Vol had a lot of good comments mentioning (and linking to) classic DC advertising.
Is the mini-mall guy really from the DC area? I thought that was in the Carolinas for some reason.
Is the mini-mall guy really from the DC area?
Alabama.
Christ, it's been ages since I lost the game. Now I'll be losing it for weeks. Curse yoooou!
No, I just mean that the whole "the game" gag is amusing for about five seconds the first time you hear about it, and completely unnecessary ever after.
If I remember that the game is about losing when you remember something, but I can't remember what it is that I'm supposed to remember (which is actually the case), have I lost? (Slightly more subtle followup question -- it's possible that the only thing you have to remember is that the game where you lose something when you remember something exists -- there's no underlying subject matter. I can't actually remember if this is the case. Still, even if that is the case, if I can't remember the conditions for losing, have I lost?)
Oh, I thought the Flea Market was located in Montgomery (County).
Poor LB, she's lost the game and doesn't even know it.
if you're an old enough dc hand, you'll love it at levitz.
anyone remember the old whfs?
I grew up with Levitz commercials in KC - definitely not an exclusively DC thing.
30--
amazing that they managed to film ads with production values so unbecoming of a national chain. you would have thought they didn't even have a local chain, given how horrible the commercials were--maybe they were just selling off the back of a truck.
did they strive for that look?
29: Do you remember Cookie O Puss?
29: anyone remember the old whfs?
Indeed. It was one of the things that help me survive high school in NoVa.
dude. cerf. cellar door. little feat.
would somebody please steal that child for me?
Damn, that was tough, but I got her in a box here. How much you gimme for her?
