Get on the stick.
That happens after they get here.
2: Better check how much weight the springs on that thing are rated for before you start piling on too many layers.
hooray. i hope you end up getting a hotel room with fontana labs and apostropher. the world would never be the same.
No doubt some people are waiting to buy more expensive tickets as a sign of their dedication. It's like that Radiohead thing, only none of the partygoers get paid.
Lurker here. I may have room in my guest room for a non-ax-murderer type. I'm right around the corner from Townhouse.
ooh, bailey, i'm going to be at the townhouse tonight. actually, armsmasher and i are there like all the time. and that location is about a 15 minute walk from the flophouse, for anybody thinking of using bailey's guest room.
What's the dress code for this event?
Oooh, now I'm going to be all pining again.
9: For the men, shirtless and drunk.
11: Oh. Is that like "black tie optional" or something?
I will likely have an extra room too. But I've posted that in various threads like twice already and nobody cares. Because I'm UNPOPULAR. I can't even give shit away!
I can tell you that my life was changed forever when I shared a hotel room with apo.
Slutty witty
Wait, I thought that was the dress code for Fickeween.
Is that like "black tie optional" or something
More like "underwear optional"
What is the appointed DC party date/time/place?
Around New Years I may have to mush into town for a bolt of gingham, fishhooks, and bar lead.
It's the night of the 29th, at the Flophouse, which is somewhere in the hoody parts of Florida avenue, I think.
Bollocks. Have pretty much decided to go to NY rather than DC whilst at the Canadian relations, and probably can't afford the time or money to do two trips over the border. If you'd said this a couple of days ago the prospect of actually meeting the real ogged might have swayed me.
Oh, now I'm wondering whether I can fly down alone just for an overnight and try my luck with bailey or marcus! (Who sounds less like a psycho?)
asilon, I was just telling the Boston crew that the possibility of your being there was tempting me to go, too!
Asilon, what about combining the two trips rather than making two separate flights? It's only about 3 hours from NYC to DC by train.
Well, of course, now I'm looking at maps and thinking that if we were driving we could do NY and then DC and then back oop north ...
For flying DCA (Reagan National) is the closest. But you can probably get cheaper flights to IAD (Dulles) or BWI (Baltimore-Washington). IAD and BWI are in the suburbs so you have to schlepp into the city. DCA is on the metro.
We'd talked ourselves into taking the kids rather than buggering off a deux. So were thinking drive rather than fly/etc. Tell me a really cheap place to stay near the Flophouse and I'll convince C the kids NEED to see the Air & Space museum!
There are buses from both IAD and BWI that take you to the nearest Metro station, so you don't really need to rent a car or anything if you feel comfortable figuring out the public transit system.
And Blume - xxxxxxxx Would love to see you too!
(Shit, are kisses allowed? Are they the original emoticon?)
email the addy above to get in touch re the room referred to in 14. Too small for kids tho, sorry!
Kids are smaller than adults, marcus.
Wait, I thought the x's were hugs and the o's were kisses?
Kids are smaller than adults, marcus.
But they circle in a wider orbit.
And faster. It's the speed that makes them unsuitable.
The missuss has largely put the kibosh on me going this year. Persuasive efforts continue.
And asilon, the kids really need to see the Air & Space Museum. You can touch a moon rock!
I'm not about to fly across the country for a party, but I have to say that with so many people going I sort of wish I could be there.
I'm there. I think Bave and I have a few ideas for places to stay.
AWB, I thought you were going to be in Chicago for the lit'rary covention.
I'm there too. I have no ideas for flights or places to stay yet and it's undetermined if I'm solo or bringing Jammies.
40: I'm coming back early just to party with the people.
AWB - do share them.
It looks a lot cheaper to stay in DC than NY, I have to say. But really dangerous! (According to some.) Was just reading one motel review, and laughing as various people are describing the walk to the Metro as being anywhere between 1/4 mile and 30 minutes.
And x's are definitely kisses (here). O's are some newfangled thing I have always assumed mean hugs.
C'mon, people. Weep, wail, and gnash.
44: a great gnashing consumes the land! Chopper present, or fun is banned!
By "ideas" I meant "people we think might not mind/notice if we stumbled, drunk, into their homes at 4am, but whom we haven't asked yet." Unfortunately.
Chopper, I really hope you make it.
Sifu - does that mean you're going?
Well, if they won't notice, then that's fine! I'll just creep in after you.
If there turns out to be a PNW satellite around the same time my chances of being there look pretty good.
No fooling, though, I really do have room on my couch.
48: it's certainly possible. I don't usually plan that far ahead, but if I decide to I do have a place to stay.
53: utter disorganization is sexy.
I don't usually plan that far ahead
ooooh, Mr Spontaneity!
54: so the mullahs would have you believe.
56: hey, they've been right so far.
asilon! I hope you can make it. I kind of have a blog crush on you. (*blush*)
You eastern seaboarders have the advantage of being not so far from each other. Is Boston-DC farther than San Francisco-Los Angeles?
You just need to start your own Flophouse, eb, on the west coast.
58 - Becks! That actually made me have to leave my computer, I was so overcome. But then whilst I was boiling the kettle, I had a horribly ogged-like moment of self-pity and decided you were saying that for a joke.
It's probably cheaper to drive from New York to DC and stay the night in DC than to stay another night in NY. So I reckon I'm in.
61 - Awww! Fear not, asilon. Your name is drawn on my Trapper Keeper with all earnestness.
And woo!
So I reckon I'm in.
Likewise, woohoo!
If you'd said this a couple of days ago the prospect of actually meeting the real ogged might have swayed me.
You have to read every comment asilon. I expect to see you there.
And if you're doing the fly/drive thing and haven't bought your tickets, you might have some luck doing an open jaw ticket so you don't have to drive back to NYC to fly back. That's how I did my most recent vacation (LGA -> DCA -> STL -> ORD -> LGA). If you book somewhere like Kayak, you can specify that you're driving between two legs. It's much cheaper than two one-ways and saves you travel time. (Although you'd have to haggle with the rental car agency about a one-way rental.)
The west coasters seem to be older and more settled in their ways.
The spousal response upon mentioning the party has been upgraded from "uh-huh" to "You know, you can go if you really want to." Still kind of guilty feelings. Is there a road trip group from Boston? I'd probably fly down Sat. morning and back Sunday afternoon.
mrh had mentioned driving down with BG.
There's actually an outside (work-related) chance I'll be in the east at the end of the year, but I'm not expecting things to work out that way.
71, 72: Someone should kidnap Brock.
74: But what if he shits all over their car?
(Too much?)
Really, I think any amount of shitting in someone else's car is too much.
76: What if it was Charles Krauthammer's specially modified van?
Then shitting is still rude, but excusable.
75 was inexcusable.
I don't think I can go. Not only would it be very difficult to slip it by the wife without either lying to her or telling her I was going (neither of which would work, obviously), but I also think my father's flying halfway across the country to visit that day. (Depending on what day it is, which I can't recall and which ogged's post inconveniently doesn't mention.)
very difficult to slip it by the wife without either lying to her or telling her
Unlike the shitting.
i'll be there. that is, if becks remembers to invite me this time [grrr]...
Yes, B, unlike. Is that surprising?
80: Well, your dad's visit puts it out of the question, but the idea otherwise would be to bring Mrs. Landers, and let her be charmed by the sensible and harmless people you associate with online.
84: Yeah, just leave the baby in a drawer, Brock.
No, silly, with his grandfather. Quality grandpa time.
Oh, right. Do you have a drawer big enough to fit the kid and grandpa?
What about hotels in the area? I don't want to get murdered.
What day is it?
Tuesday. Do you know where you are?
If I were to make it, who wants to split a hotel room?
I'm a considerate and polite roommate, and only occasionally have gas so foul my wife once woke up (on our honeymoon no less) afraid that a dog had gotten in the room.
You know, if you'd had an email address visible I would have emailed you when this thread opened up.
Thanks AWB. 12/29 is the day my father arrives. Which is great, because with that legitimate excuse I'll not feel guilty about being too much of a chickenshit to attend.
So suppose someone were hanging out at the APA in Baltimore on Dec. 29, with nothing to do for the evening. Any chance that others would have a ride down to the party that he could share?
And that they could all ride back to B'more before daylight the next day?
If anyone needs a spot to crash, I think I'll probably rent a hotel room again this year. Drop me a line.
And that they could all ride back to B'more before daylight the next day?
This sounds like a bad idea drinking-wise.
I wonder how many hotel rooms it takes to get a group rate. Anyone have experience with weddings and such?
UnfoggeDCon 2.5: afterparty at the hotel.
Kids are smaller than adults, marcus.
But they circle in a wider orbit.
"But" s/b "So"
What happens at UnfoggeDCon, stays at UnfoggeDCon.
Except the infections.
You just need to start your own Flophouse, eb, on the west coast.
The place where I live would be perfect, if all the other tenants were replaced.
Where did the hotel people stay last year?
103: you should really bring enough antibiotics for everybody.
"Whoah, multi-drug resistant commenting? What is that, really?"
Well, I definitely want to go. Someone (I think it was Matt F) offered me a couch, but I'd take a room too. I'll e-mail mrh, but I'd love to have backup plans for road tripping.
I second the idea of reserving a bloc of rooms somewhere, if it's not more trouble than its worth. We can all go out for pancakes in the morning.
Ye gods, this really is turning into a con. Will there be a registration desk?
Nah, just sign your name on Heebie's ass and waltz on in.
Waltz on in? What kind of two-bit hussy do you take me for?
He didn't say anything about paying two bits.
What w-lfs-n said. Greatly though it pains me to say so.
But waltzes are in 3/4, so it could be kind of difficult for the rhythmically challenged.
Whaddya say, Heebie? Six bits good enough?
Now you all've done it. My butts getting huffy. Come back, butt! What will I sit on?
Now I'll have to coax it to even come to DC at all.
Heebie's butt waltzes solo—cheek-to-cheek.
Maybe we can cheer it up. Two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar, all for Heebie's ass stand up an holler.
Yay!
Note that I am trusting the women of Unfogged on this, for which I expect major feminist cred.
I think it's starting to smile. At least, I see a crack.
Hopefully the new cab system will be in place by then, to minimize fucking of out-of-towners.
Hopefully... minimize fucking of out-of-towners.
Am I vastly misunderstanding this party?
to minimize fucking of out-of-towners
Somebody isn't clear on the concept here.
I was very pleased to be able to get my ticket for $10. Apparently I've been accumulating miles on my credit card for 6-7 years and only now realized it.
88/90: I'm still waiting for some bbq or some shite that i learned about in trapeze... i'm not bitter or anything, just messin.
Promise me this thing won't be vlogged.
That's all I ask.
LB, presuming you were addressing me rather than Brock upthread, I've sent you an e-mail.
I should really get an e-mail address that doesn't correspond to my real name.
The last one was live-blogged. I think we do ourselves a disservice by not upgrading our taunting mechanism. If only for the Jackmormon/Neil the Ethical Werewolf Pants-Off Dance-Off.
To say nothing of the hipster level.
129: Heh. No, I was talking to teo.
What, you don't want to share a hotel room?
Who, God willing, is having more fun than we are right now.
Barring the unforeseen, I'm in, and still willing to road-trip it with BG. Anyone want to share a hotel room?
We'll have to get two beds, though. Try to hide your disappoint.
mrh and Chopper, bunk it up, yo!
I was not wearing pants to dance off.
Hey Chopper, do you prefer to be the big spoon, or the little spoon?
138: And then she went looking for unsuspecting shoe salesmen.
I was born in DC. Here are a few travel hints:
National Airport is a good airport. BWI is OK. Avoid Dulles, if possible.
The city is divided into 4 quadrants named after points on the compass. When looking for hotels, remember that NW is the least ghetto, followed by NE, SW, and SE.
For cheaper accommodations in the suburbs, I would recommend something in Silver Spring or Rockville, both of which are on the metro. Of the two, I'd probably pick Silver Spring. Something in Rossyln or Crystal City across the river could also work, and would be pretty close to National Airport.
Amtrak can get you between Baltimore and DC pretty easy. There is a commuter train, the MARC, which is cheaper but I think only runs on weekdays. There is also a train station near BWI airport (take a shuttle to get there), and from there a train can take you into Union Station in DC.
Also, we'll send out an Evite closer to the actual date with all of the logistical info, but if you need to know, say, where we live sooner for finding a hotel, you can email unfoggedcon at unfogged dot com. General tip: we're in NW, near the Green Line.
If only for the Jackmormon/Neil the Ethical Werewolf Pants-Off Dance-Off.
I wish NEWW was commenting here. Maybe the threads would be just a little bit about philosophy sometimes. I do find it interesting to watch people talk about philosophy in real time.
You wis he were commenting here, Neddie.
I do find it interesting to watch people talk about philosophy in real time.
You watch a lot of baseball, don't you.
No, I was talking to teo.
What? My e-mail address is and always has been in the sidebar of my blog.
Rah and I are very likely going to be there. I'm pricing hotels right now.
As entertaining as this sounds, I guess that I should not bring my kids. But, they do enjoy dancing and socializing very much. decisions. decisions.
Maybe I'll just host a brunch for anyone traveling through Richmond. Attire should be "red-eyed and disheveled."
Oh will, you have to come, you're practically next door! Babysitter?
An Asilon appearance is tempting.
Maybe if Stanley isnt going, I'll see if he wants to watch the kids.
22: Counterfly, are they installing meters or something? The zone system didn't seem too bad.
Maybe if Stanley isnt going, I'll see if he wants to watch the kids.
Of course I'm going, will. But you can leave your kids with my rooommates. They're really good with their cats. Just the other day, one cat got hurt, and they had it into the vet within two or three days. And now it's fine!
Our lease in fact stipulates that kids and pregnant women are not allowed to stay here, what with all the lead paint.
Rah and I are very likely going to be there.
Sweet.
Our lease in fact stipulates that kids and pregnant women are not allowed to stay here, what with all the lead paint.
Now I am definitely bringing them.
Sir Kraab and I will be attending, in case anyone was wondering.
I saw Neil the Ethical Werewolf just last night, and I do think he was discussing some philosophy in real time at one point, but he was further down the table, so I can't be sure. He engaged in no dancing, alas.
Also, he was wearing a t-shirt featuring the visages of Willow and Oz. I of course called him on his blatant homophobia, but he explained that he wasn't anti-lesbian, just very very pro-werewolf. So I guess that's okay.
No idea if he's coming to UnfoggeDCon II, the Unfoggedening or not, but SK and I will definitely try to talk him into it.
Sir Kraab and I will be attending, in case anyone was wondering.
Hey great! We should carpool
Re: cheapish places to stay, I have discovered that there are many more B&Bs & etc. in D.C. these days, some with rooms for $100 or less, and several apts/studios into which it sounds like you could fit 4-5 people for under $200/night; some have small kitchens, for the saving of addt'l bucks.
Check out http://www.bedandbreakfastdc.com and http://www.bbonline.com/dc/washington.html
A few of them are quite near the Flophouse.
Rah and I are very likely going to be there.
Kickass. I've wanted to meet the 'Pants for quite some time.
meet the 'Pants
I think that's the title of a porn movie.
I can afford to go if I have a place to stay there. I'd prefer to spend at least a week somewhere on the East Coast, not necessarily DC. My whirlwind 4-day NYC visit was to much travel for not enough stuff.
I suggest posting your plea/offer in a more current thread, JE. It would be great to see you at UnfoggeDCon.
I suggest getting ben to post about your need for abodement, JE.
He'll probably only mention it in a comment, though. He's lame that way.
I wish we could pull off going to DC as well as Chicago. But we are not quite as whirlwind as that.
It's okay rfts, I'm sure the people in Chicago won't mind that you chose DC instead.
And I will be at my mother in law's. Party on, young people.
I confess that I am sufficiently excited that I am a little scared. I will try not to spend the entire night crouched in hiding behind Rah.
