I see that Becks' clever timestamp manipulation has foiled my plan to push her post down.

Curse you, Becks!

I don't see how that's relevant. You don't need to give out your name, just your address (to receive) or nothing (to send).

you know, I never thought of having an address unconnected from a name before.

As a kid I was always hypernervous that if I didn't write the address exactly right the package wouldn't come. Or if it was addressed to the right address but the name was wrong, the post office wouldn't know what to do.

I'm willing to send one of mine to whomever wants one, and I also don't think that *making* a mix should be a requirement of getting one. So anyone who wants to make one can advertise his/her availability for sending, and anyone who wants to receive one can say whose they'd be interested in, as far as I'm concerned, though some people might not want to have to send too many out. Wev.

Right, that's why I said there shouldn't be any need for anyone who doesn't want to to make one. I mean: this thread could just as well be people saying "hey I'll make a mix" and other people saying "cool send me one". This is really far too disorganized, though.

It's my fault for trying to be fair and democratic: I should just have asked who wants a mix from me, and other people can work out their own arrangements on their own time.

So Ben, are you the trusted one who will collect a list of who wants mixes along with addresses, and who will send mixes? Perhaps a list of people and their mix ideas, which those who want mixes may select from?

I'll probably do a selection of favorite songs from 2007, covering the territory from melancholy electronic to neo-tribal drum-based stuff to riff-heavy rock to a melancholy/sneering pop cover. Perhaps with a filthy R&B jam thrown in. I can either skew deliberately more esoteric, or I can go for the tracks I honestly think were the best which includes widely known stuff such as MIA, Menomena, etc.

Yeah, right. But secretly I don't care enough to coördinate a swap. I just said that so it wouldn't seem as if I were putting myself above others. I just want to know who wants a CD from me. The others can shift for themselves.

I would like a CD from someone, as long as they don't expect to receive a CD in return.

It's all want want want around here this time of year.

Seriously, just musically impaired. Trade for other inexpensive goods - durable or otherwise - would be considered.

Someone should coordinate.

My suggestion is that everyone who's making CD's should send a couple (2,2,4?) of them to Ben and then Ben should send out one of his CDs and a random CD from the pile to each person who sends their address to ben.

Ben, do you have a sense of when you're like to get to this? How pressed for time should I feel?

Well, I've got one more or less done already but I'm going home to socal on Thursday and won't be taking my music collection with me. I won't be returning until early Jan, and then I'll have to (b) make at least one other mix and ii. make the cases assuming the tentative design I've thought of actually works.

So you've got some time.

A swap would be fun, but coordinating is a headache. It was rude of me to suggest initially, both for the work imposition and for changing Ben's cool idea. That said, anyone who'd like to exchange a mix CD for either the set I posted, a blues set, or a middle eastern set, please email.

67,68: I thought defending Ben was against the bylaws of the blog?

Obviously, I can't commit Ben to anything, and I would defend his right to decline, and would feel guilty if it made him feel like it was too much work to send out CDs.

My thought was just (1) there are enough people interested in sharing CDs that it would be useful to have someone act as a central hub. (2) It would be somewhat adventageous if the person acting as the hub were a poster or frequent commenter, just because more people will "know" them. (3) Ben in planning on mailing out CDs anyway. (4) I trust that Ben's utter disregard for other people would enable him to implement the plan in a way that would cause a minimum of stress for him.

On the downsides, in addition to the extra work for Ben, it might interfere with his attempts at custom packaging.

On the plus side, for Ben, it would mean he would have the option of keeping a copy of every mix, if he wanted.

So, I thought it was worth mentioning the idea and seeing if Ben was willing to be coerced into volunteering. *shrug*.

Here's what I'll do. When I'm done, I'll email everyone who seems to have expressed interest in sending mixes and alert them. I will put up a post soliciting people to email addresses to whomever it is from whom they want to receive a cd. This will mean:

1. people will have to either make public their emails, or get disposable ones
2. people will have to be comfortable sending out their addresses to multiple people if they want mixes from multiple people.
3. people might get more requests than they're willing to honor, the fucking scrooges.

But, otoh, it will be super easy.
