Re: Coaches Are Mean II

I'd call Chris Hansen. One can't be too careful.

You're being a little unclear, does he know you don't know where the pool is? If you ask, "Where is this pool?" and he replies, "Surrounded by the pool deck," then you'd have a complaint.

There's a difference between 'mean' and 'terse,' a distinction which several of my exes failed to make. Terseness could be a good thing in a coach.

Finding the pool on your own is the first step on the road to the status of True Swimmer, my son.

Don't think I'm not annoyed that I found directions on my own.

Terseness could be a good thing in a coach.

Ogged, a novice, wanted to become a swimmer, so he sought out M—, a renowned swimming coach. Where should I meet you for the lesson?, asked ogged. At the pool, said M—, and ogged was enlightened.

6: Zackly. I was also thinking of the koan in which the monk forces the novice's head into the water nearly to the point of drowning, then says "When you thirst for truth improvement in your stroke as you just thirsted for air the location of the pool, then you will know what truth improvement in your stroke is."

Actually, this exchange with the coach is great. Seriously. He is being very patient. I have these kinds of email exchanges with people all the time.

God, Ogged, it's just like you're a student.

Wait, I guess in a way you are.

You respond to your students in the way this coach does?

Customer: Hi, I'm looking for, uh, it's a new york times bestseller, and I think the author's name begins with a "T". A friend of mine has it; the cover's blue. Do you know where I can find it?
Parsimon: With the books.

A Zen master would perhaps answer, "I eat when hungry, I sleep when tired." If he is nature-minded, he may say, "It was fine yesterday and today it is raining." For the blogger, however, the question may still remain unsolved, "Where is the archer pool?"

Why would he meet you anywhere but the deck?

Ok, I can make this, if you're still available.
Where should we meet? (And where do you park??)

I would totally ignore the questions, too.

13: Understand is achieved.

"Where's my book?"

"It's on its way, should be there any day now."

"I really need it by tomorrow, my class is starting!"

"It is out of my hands."

etc.
