Have I been mistaken all this time in thinking that Cala goes to grad school in NYC?
I hope this means that Cala aced the interviews with $ConsultingFirm and they are doing further interviews in New York City. That'd be cool.
Sweet. I'm there with bells on. Ordering champagne.
I won't have bells, as they are not part of the official Interview Attire. (Decided to get the suit jacket taken in. Yay for tailors!)
Wait, is this the night before the interview? Is the plan to get Cala falling down drunk so that she bombs her interview the next day and gets saved from the dark fate of a con$ulting career?
Does this mean that Cala is following the noble path blazed by myself and Parsimon, and dropping out of philosophy grad school?
Evening after, KR. I do know a guy who got drunk at the APA and attended an interview the next morning. He did not make a good impression, but neither did his interviewers make a good impression on him, being hungover themselves.
Couldn't you ask con$ulting firm to change the date of the interview so that I could attend the party?
Hurray! I'm going to be in NYC next Wednesday too!
w00t meetup with Cala and mcmc! Now let us dither about which bar is cool enough/not too cool to hold us.
Yay, Cala! What a lovely Friday of news!
Hey, congrats, Cala!
(This also-dissertating one is observing this consulting experiment with great personal interest.)
Consulting you say... There's $ in it? Well, then it's not for me. But that's wonderful news. I'm sorry that I'll be on the other side of the country. Still, I'll raise a glass to excellent tailors and good fortune. And LB, congratulations to you too.
Congratulations and good luck, Cala. Do they know that your husband can blow up the place if they don't offer you a job?

Isn't everyone?
Thanks to all for the congratulations. I don't think the dynamite would help, but we did just get a letter in the mail constituting his official ATF authorization to transport, handle, &c today. Not sure how he's been managing all this legally before.
Not sure how he's been managing all this legally before.
Would you like to tell someone holding a bunch of dynamite that he's not allowed to work with it?
22: Teehee. I think the answer is that since the permit is derivative (based on the company's ATF license), it's retroactive to the start date once approved. Maybe. But we're talking at least... hmmmm. Six-seven months of processing time?
Aw, man. You New Yorkers get to hang out with all the cool people.
For once, I won't be posting comments like 25-7.
No, I think you fail to comprehend the totality of the unfairness. To me.
Although I cannot offer proof of the fact, I understood perfectly well the unfairness at the time of posting 28. It would be indiscreet to say why or how.
The post title contains a misplaced modifier.
The comments section contains two misplaced pedants.
I'm pretty sure I'm placed right where I should be.
There are pedants outside of you, Ben.
Of course. Inside of me, it's too dark to be pedantic.
I request that you reminisculize your initial letter, by the way.
I hope you appreciated the generosity of the setup. The initial was an error that I shall try not to repeat.
You know I appreciate your generosity more than anything, slol.
You know I appreciate your generosity
Would that I were worthy.
Congrats, Cala. Fngers x'ed.
Congrats Cala! Best luck with the interview.
Woo-hoo Cala!
Just remember, they may own more suits, but you have more...what they pay the suits for.
you have more...what they pay the suits for.
Va va voom?
Don't look for a job in consulting any time soon, Ben.
(But while I have you here -- have you ever heard of Gary Clark Jr.? If so, what do you think of him?)
Are you saying I lack va va voom?
I have never heard of Gary Clark Jr.
But I have heard of Greg Ashley and his album Painted Garden's not half bad, no sir!
Witt, not sure why you're asking about Clark, but we saw him a couple of weeks ago at the premiere of Honeydripper. (He, Sayles, Maggie Renzi, and Eddie Shaw did a Q&A after the movie.) I haven't heard him play other than in the movie, though.
Well, Clark is hands-down the best thing in the new John Sayles movie Honeydripper. The movie's pretty uneven, actually, but he's absolutely terrific.
Sir K, what did you think of the movie?
I will, of course, be there to welcome Cala to our fair city. Count me in.
If this goes well, maybe every non-tenured academic on unfogged will become a consultant. Down with the black suits!
It's just an internship. I am still finishing the Ph.D., and still putting in one try at the APA this fall.
53- heh. Even at Unfogged, corporate culture eventually wins out.
Clinton and Obama are in town tonight. But I cannot go. Bummer.
50: I liked it a lot. Clark was good. I also thought Lisa Gay Hamilton was terrific (though, damn, she needs to eat a little more), as was China Doll.
Had I known less about it before I saw it, or had it been made by someone other than Sayles, I would have liked it less, I think. I'm bad at explaining this sort of thing in writing. Because I knew that Sayles meant for it to be about a particular moment in rock-n-roll, I was much more open to the "let's put on a show!" everything-will-fall-into-place script and some of the things that went along with it, like pulling punches on the sheriff's menacingness.
oh drat. I looked at my schedule, and I won't be in NYC Wednesday. I can't come down until Thursday; v. disappointed to miss Cala, not to mention the meetup at large.
