Re: Commercial

1

Is swimming marketed at all? Ouside of the jingoistic Olympic spectacle, which is about medals, not beef (or cheese) cake. If Americans didn't clean up, swimming would get as much airtime as rhythmic gymnastics.

Forget swimming; what business in the US advertises that they've got a long way to go, they're getting back to basics, and they're listening, and cutting the crap, but they know talk is cheap?

Swimming as such isn't marketed, but swimmers are used in ads; think of Michael Phelps for ATT and Visa during the last Olympics, or Amanda Beard for godaddy.

A girlfriend that he met while swimming. You would expect that this would give him a reason to try to run as far as possible with the "swimmers are sexy" line.

Post-graduation, I was told by a (male) fellow high-school swim team member that our (dickish) coach intentionally made a rather buxom and not-very-talented chick swim backstroke always so he and the boys could watch her jiggle. So swimming can also totally be sexy because your stroke sucks in such a way that your tits bounce around!

I just don't know if swimmers 'are portrayed' in enough of a mainstream consistent way for there to be a 'way' they are portrayed. My own stereotyped notion of swimmers comes only from personal experience, and I definitely think lithe.

I dated an especially lithe swimmer in college. So he had the body type part, but was totally herky jerky in his movements, which works against my stereotyped notion of swimmers as graceful. But he was gay, as it turns out, so I might be unfairly extrapolating from his makeout approach. To me.

Wikipedia says:

"A ronin (浪人, rōnin?) was a samurai with no lord or master during the feudal period (1185-1868) of Japan. A samurai became masterless from the ruin or fall of his master (as in the case of death in a war), or after the loss of his master's favor or privilege.

"The word rōnin literally means 'drifting person'. The term originated in the Nara and Heian periods, when it referred to a serf who had fled or deserted his master's land. It then came to be used for a samurai who had lost his master."

Yes, one of the interesting parts of Japanese is that plurals are only used when absolutely necessary (and even then, only words denoting people can be pluralized). "Ronin" can be singular or plural as you please, just like "samurai".
