Re: Things That Are Making Me Happy

The strawberries are indeed extra yummy this year, and that recording of the duet is precious.

Thanks for a happy post, LB. I am also feeling sapped up tonight. We have been doing this (I think dumb) thing with my kid to get her to pee on the potty, wherein she gets a toy out of this big box of coveted toys. And tonight she got the last one out and played with in the bath. I was fussing with some other stuff in the room adn hadn't been listening to her dialogue, but I finally caught a snippet of the new toy saying, "I am finally out of my box! And wow am I happy!" I swooned. So that is making me happy.

By the way, this post just cost me $187. How you ask? Well, first Rory asks, "What are you listening to?" Then, in explaining who Sally and Newt and Lizard Breath are, I note that, "Actually, that's who recommended Spirited Away." I had forgotten how much additional Ghibli I had promised we'd order one of these days...

I'll join in the wave of warm parental support.

I just came back from talking with Iris about what sorts of gowns the goddesses would wear to one another's weddings, and the gifts they might give*. I'm filled with warmth and love. What a kid!

* Athene is sure to give branches of olive trees, as she would want to share her tree, plus they could make food out of it. So thoughtful, that Athene!

Either their piano teacher is very good, or they've inherited some music from their father's side of the family (Buck's dad used to play slide guitar for 'Big Sam's Harmony Rangers', the finest cowboy band ever to come out of New Jersey). It's not that they're terribly good, but they really do seem to like it. I, on the other hand, took about five years of piano, and it was always a chore for me (and for poor Mr. Fulton, who had to listen to me).

Iris still occasionally talks about Spirited Away, in fear. Whoever here said that she was old enough was so wrong. We didn't even make it to the boiler room scene.

OTOH, she woke up asking for Mei and Satsuki yesterday, so we haven't failed utterly.

12: Iris is pretty underexposed to media, so I think she doesn't have a lot of reserves to deal with scary stuff on screen. She's been hearing the Medusa story - with no punches pulled - since she was 2-1/2, but she's still scared to watch that part of Clash of the Titans.

Actually, for a long time, she couldn't handle the part in Totoro where the goat bleats at Mei. But that part is kind of scary-weird, with the creepy square goat pupils and buck teeth.

great post, i third 2
my oldest niece when she was 2-3 yo used to ask me to read her a fairytale, i think it was a Little red-cap, so i would tell her the tale and she would cry at the exactly same place and when i refuse to read it the next time, she would ask me to read it again and refuse to listen to the other stories and again cry at the same place and so on day after day
it was exhausting
then after sometime she grew out of that phase

Sybil - replying to your BPhd post here - Iris was 1.5 and 3.25 for a couple flights to Germany - Sadie will be fine. Just bring a sippy cup/juice box for takeoff, and a bag full of new trinkets to reverse any looming bad moods. I'm sure you've thought of this, but be reassured - that's all you need, especially if you have a movie available.

Not if you give it to her before she's seriously perturbed. Kids are pretty acquisitive, and a new little animal (like the kind that come 15 to a tube) will usually please. There might be hits and misses, but the general trend is, "Ooh, it's new!," not "Hmm, how good a thing is this?"

For a seriously long flight (over, say, 3 hours), I'd maybe bring one sure-fire winner (that's more than a trinket) as a backup, but never bring it out if possible.

My poor dog is getting hosed on his evening walk. Score, Pens!

Don't abandon hope, Pirates fans. Who has the best record in baseball right now? The Cubs. Who has the best record in the AL? Tampa, for crying out loud. Obviously, anything can happen.

That said, a Cubs-Rays series would surely be a sign of the end times, ushering in the ascension of the Antichrist to the White House and potentially disrupting the next baseball season, in which case the Pirates would be screwed.

Strawberries! Bought 3 baskets when I was driving through Gilroy on the way back from LA to SF. Should have bought 6. Seriously, once you cut them up and stick 'em in the fridge, they're a little TOO easy to eat. Hello, on top of yogurt with my granola. Hello, you are in my smoothie now. Hello, I am now eating you by the sticky red handful. Hello, I am now giving the GF the stink-eye for stealing them from my cereal.

I just bought some more (alas, not from Gilroy) which I plan to macerate and then scoop over angel food cake. Mostly because how often do you get to macerate anything?

or she would play with an invisible ball and pretend to throw it and ask us to catch it
