My God, this has become a land without laws.
Wow. No kidding. It's the Wild West around here.
At least it's a proper sport this time round.
"SEMIH SENTÜRK scores at the death!" Sounds like a great match. And don't forget, if you've ODed on Euro 2008, the US Women's team plays Canada at 1AM ET in the Peace Queen Cup final, Suwon, Korea.
This is good.

Did Rustu Recber do anything interesting?
I would have gone with "let the record reflect" -- then you would have preserved your desired tone while maintaining accuracy.
From CNN: "Recber Rustu saved from Mladen Petric to spark wild celebrations."
Actually, I rather like football.
I would have gone with "let the record reflect" -- then you would have preserved your desired tone while maintaining accuracy.
It is true, though. There are witnesses.
Yeah, using the phrase "let the record reflect" outside of a transcribed, adversarial proceeding is, or should be, deprecated. I'm instructed that even inside such a proceeding, it's unnecessary.
Very boring match with an incredible finish. Too bad Germany will destroy Turkey in the semi's. They're losing several players to yellow cards, and Croatia never really challenged their mediocre defense.
Rermember, the Turks invented genocide. Don't write them off against their German imitators.
Fifa rules prohibit genocide during the match.
Yeah, and NBA rules prohibit contact and travelling.
"Turkey, deploying their almost-forgotten 'genocide' offense/defense, stunned Germany and the world today in the Cup semifinals. The remaining Germans walked sullenly off the field muttering in their native language about "die verfickte Nuremburg urteilen" or some such shit. The Turko-German members of the German team went straight to counseling."
17 is right; it was a very dull match with two good minutes at the end. In reply to 8, yes, Recber did threethings interesting: he gave away the first goal by doing something really stupid, then hit the free kick from which Turkey equalized, then saved one of the penalties.
Are there no Germo-Turcans on the Turkish team?
When Turkey defeats Germany, their Germos will gloat in a normal genocidal fashion.
the second overtime half
It's extra time, not overtime, n00b.
Or "injury time". "Overtime" would refer to a discreet period of play dispensed during an elimination match in the event that regulation ends in a tie.
Ogged was not a capricious Ogged, O Commenters.
Or "injury time".
Injury time is time added on at the end for stoppages during regular play. Extra time is two 15 minute halves after the regulation 90 minutes to decide a drawn game in a knock-out tournament.
Oh, well then that's also called "overtime".
I observed that there was still time for Turkey to tie it up.
You, and the announcers, and pretty much everyone else who had seen them score two goals in three minutes to beat the Czechs. It was an unlikely goal but it wasn't exactly a huge surprise.
Witnesses can verify that several times during the Netherlands-Russia game that I insisted that it "wasn't over until it's over" and urged the Dutch to "play hard until the final whistle." Extra time has just started and I predict that the team that "wants it more" will win. We'll see.
pretty much everyone else who had seen them score two goals in three minutes to beat the Czechs
Yeah, but I hadn't seen that.
Re: 33
It is, indeed, over. Farewell, Clockwork Orange.
Ugh, that loss to Russia made me sad, esp since I was primed by the Great Turkish Delight to expect a tying goal in the dying nanoseconds of the match.
Go Azzurri?
35, 36: Well what can you say, turns out I was right in 33, Russia won and they wanted it more. At least the Dutch know what they need to work on.
The Azzuri will win, because I will be pulling for Spain. My record this Cup is perfect. Place your bets accordingly. Les jeux sont faits.
39: The Azzuri will win, because I will be pulling for Spain
I suspect you have the causal relationship reversed, I think you are subconsciously picking up on overconfidence, nonchalance, ironic distance from the task at hand and other factors that lead teams to ultimately be found wanting in their wanting to win. There's a science to this, you know.
There's a science to this
i think the dutch uniform's asymmetric design worked against them, causing maybe not enough concentration, though orange is a powerful colour
37: At least the Dutch know what they need to work on.
Passing a law to ensure that Heitinga never again plays for their national team?
34: Yeah, but I hadn't seen that.
Too bad -- two games in a row, now, they've basically pulled a victory out of their collective asses at the very last minute. And once again, people are lining up to make them the heavy underdog against Germany. "Sure, they could do it twice, but three times?" Very obviously, they're the Team of Destiny, touched by the soccer gods and clear favorites for the championship to anyone who can see the situation clearly...
Just about everything that can go right and still result in a 0-0 game has gone right for Italy so far.
