Musta read that plaque several times by now; that's why it's on the seat.
Just because there are losers and winners in globalization doesn't mean that the losers need to be unhappy. It's not zero-sum! The winners win A LOT more than the losers lose.
Sadly, Americans have joined the ranks of those who fail to understand this as a result of their ersatz "selfishness", which would be good if they really understood what sort of selfishness would benefit the economy, or GDP for short.
Standpipe, hello!
I don't know what you intend with your picture, and I dearly hope I am not distracting from the matter, but it did remind me of Berube's open letter from the world.
The statue of liberty is constipated.
5: save it for Standpipe's b....last. Damn and blast.
This blog has been Standpipe's blog for a while. For longer than Standpipe has been blogging on it.
jms is commenting on the quality of unfogged.
I submit that "Unnnnnnnnnngh" is an ambiguous onomatopœism. I took it as a groan of annoyance at the incredibly predictable Economist editorial.
I took it as a moan of despair at the zombie hordes posed to invade.
Lady Liberty does not have troubles pooping in public places (like when things get grunty).
W-lfs-n!
It's true, I haven't been commenting so much lately, have I?
3 is kinda a weird non sequitur.
To respond, it seems odd to have the basic free-trade-the-dumb-way put out in such clear and enthusiastic terms. People should be happy to lose as a result of globalization because someone else is getting more rich than they are getting poorer? Uh, I don't think people usually see it that way, nor do I think they are wrong to do so. Especially since the losers of free trade are usually people who are already economically vulnerable and the winners are usually people already doing well. Taking from the poor to give to the rich is not usually considered a good deal, except by the rich.
Now, if there was some sort of... agreement, amongst the participants, that the profits of free trade would, in part, be collected into a pool and used to reinburse the losers and allow them to re-enter the economy in a productive way, then you might be able to both increase the total productiveness of the system without unfairly screwing some people over in favor of others. But Social Democracy is not a phrase one can really use in US political discourse.
holding one's hand to the cheek like that is a bad luck, like calling desperation and defeat
my mom would have said take down your hand at once
