Are you trying to make my mind's ear cry?
1. "Hotel California"
2. "Man in the Mirror"
3. "Boys"
4. "Sultans of Swing"
5. "Motownphilly"
6. "Funky, Funky Xmas"
7. "Sweet Child O' Mine"
8. "Waterfalls"
1. Desperado
2. PYT
3. Toxic
4. Sultans of Swing
5. Motown Philly
6. Step by Step
7. Welcome to the Jungle (feel my serpentine!)
8. Creep
(I had to google to find the name of an NKOTB song, I am proud to say. Middle school: successfully forgotten!)
This is going to be the longest game of Mastermind ever.
This is all going to come down to all of us only knowing two Dire Straits songs, and Heebie having some obscure one as her favorite.
Well, the best Eagles song is Lyin' Eyes, obviously.
And a good follow up is Don't Cry (Guns 'n' Roses).
6: Yeah, basically. What fun for me!
1. Lyin' Eyes
2. Billie Jean
3. Boys
4. So Far Away From Me
5. Motownphilly
6. You Got It (The Right Stuff)
7. November Rain
8. Red Light Special
7: That would have been deliciously evil. But I stuck with artists whose best song is one of their mainstream hits.
1. "Take It To The Limit" as performed by Sarah Dougher
2. The question is properly, "Who is the best guest rapper?" and the answer is "Vincent Price"
3. "Oops! I Did It Again" as requested by and sung loudly along to by my six-year-old cousin when I was playing the ukulele
4. The one with "faggots"
5. ????
6. "Oh-oh-oh-oh...the White Pus"
7. See 4.
8. Waterfalls. Makes me cry.
11: No correct answers! Which is actually very informative.
Here are some other Dire Straits songs:
Telegraph Road; Romeo and Juliet; Brothers in Arms; Tunnel of Love; Where Do You Think You're Going; Money for Nothing.
I'm surprised I can't remember more, actually; I used to have a best-of when I was still in my nonage.
13: I believe there is a sincere submission buried in there, but I couldn't figure out which song you're aiming for in some of those.
The "faggots" one is "Money for Nothing". ("That little faggot's got his own jet airplane / That little faggot, he's a millionaire".)
Money for Nothing was the other one I knew.
All the girls loved me in 5th grade because I could make the Apple IIes in the lab beep out New Kids songs.
16: That's OK. Just listen to the preview at the Sarah Dougher link and I'll be happy.
What?!?? "Boys" is by far the best Britney Spears song. I question your methods.
1. "Desperado"
2. "Stranger in Moscow"
3. "Boys"
4. "Sultans of Swing"
5. "Vibin' (The New Flava)"
6. "Dirty Dawg"
7. "Paradise City"
8. "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg"
3 and 5 have two songs (Motownphilly and Sultans of Swing) in common, but 5 has one more correct answer than 3. And we now know that Motownphilly isn't one of the right answers. Someone submit a version of 11 with "Sultans of Swing" replacing "So Far Away From Me".
Really, with 11 in hand, it shouldn't be hard to get all the rest. Tedious, but not hard.
I suggest a limit of 10,000 guesses per person per hour, to prevent ben from doing what he suggests in 25.
Anyway, I'll play.
1. Tequila Sunrise
2. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough
3. Oops, I Did It Again
4. Walk of Life
5. End of the Road
6. Hangin' Tough
7. Sweet Child O' Mine
8. No Scrubs
21 is support for the thesis that "Sultans of Swing" belongs on the final list, but come on, guys, you're not exactly proceeding scientifically here.
Yeah, everyone wants to be the one who gets all eight right off, through the magic of his or her taste aligning with heebie's, since heebie has said that "the first one" to get all eight right will "win": but that's how heebie keeps us down. We can do this—together.
26: I'm more interested in the process.
1. Desperado (edges out Take It To The Limit)
2. Billie Jean (edges out Beat It)
3. Baby, One More Time (edges out Oops...)
4. Sultans of Swing (edges out Romeo and Juliet)
5. (No opinion or guess)
6. The Right Stuff
7. Welcome To The Jungle (edges out Paradise City and Sweet Child O' Mine cuz it's harder--though I'm open to debate this)
8. Waterfalls. No contest, though "No Scrubs" is pretty damn satisfying.
I was assuming there's some sort of wordplay involved and it's not just a random list of songs.
and it's not just a random list of songs.
They're not random. They're the best.
29 is inspiring, though, to my shame, it did not inspire 32.
1. Tequila Sunrise
2. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough
3. Oops, I Did It Again
4. Walk of Life
5. Motownphilly
6. You Got It (The Right Stuff)
7. November Rain
8. Red Light Special
1. Desperado
2. Don't Stop Till You Get Enough
3. Oops! I Did It Again
4. Romeo and Juliet
5. Motownphilly
6. You Got It (The Right Stuff)
7. Welcome to the Jungle

3. Oops, I Did It Again
4. Walk of Life
5. End of the Road

8. Red Light Special
Fine, heebie. I submit the following eight guesses simultaneously:
1. Tequila Sunrise
2. Billie Jean
3. Boys
4. So Far Away From Me
5. Motownphilly
6. You Got It (The Right Stuff)
7. November Rain
8. Red Light Special

3. Boys
4. So Far Away From Me
5. Motownphilly
6. You Got It (The Right Stuff)
7. November Rain
8. Red Light Special
1. Lyin' Eyes
2. Billie Jean
3. Oops, I Did It Again
4. So Far Away From Me
5. Motownphilly

1. Lyin' Eyes
2. Billie Jean
3. Boys
4. So Far Away From Me
5. Motownphilly

1. Lyin' Eyes
2. Billie Jean
3. Boys

1. Lyin' Eyes
2. Billie Jean
3. Boys
4. So Far Away From Me
5. Motownphilly
6. Hangin' Tough
7. November Rain
8. Red Light Special
This is so much easier for me to grade people's submissions than those other fucking puzzlers. "NS, NSEW, W, W, NW, S, NE."
1. Witchy Woman
2. Dirty Diana
3. E-Mail My Heart
4. Twisting By The Pool
5. 'll Make Love To You
6. Dirty Dawg
7. November Rain
8. Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg
1. "Hotel California"
2. "Billie Jean"
3. ". . . Baby One More Time"
4. "Money For Nothing"
5. "End of the Road"
6. "I'll Be Loving You Forever"
7. "Patience"
8. "What About Your Friends"
And then we have:
I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman (Britney)
Lady Writer (Dire Straits)
I'm disappointed that Billy Jean isn't a winning song. Surely there's nothing else in the discography that's not somehow tainted.
Comparing 11, 21 and 32 we can lock "Desperado".
"Waterfalls" is looking good.
42.1: No correct answers!
42.2: No correct answers!
42.3: No correct answers!
42.4: Two correct answers!
42.5: No correct answers!
42.6: No correct answers!
42.7: No correct answers!
42.8: One correct answer!
The best Eagles song must be "Life in the Fast Lane". Walsh it up!
47: I think "Sultans of Swing" is as likely as "Desperado".
OT: Can anyone recommend nice men's cologne/aftershaves? I'm not exactly sure what aftershave is for exactly, but I'm looking for some sort of scented product. Adidas made drug store stuff that smelled nice--sort of clean and masculine, but it's become increasingly hard to get, so, it would be nice to find an alternative. I think that Creed or other super high-end French colognes would provoke sticker shock. I'm thinking of something middle-range that one can buy at Macy's. I don't know anything about men's fragrance. I remember in middle school/junior high that a lot of boys wore sickening amounts of Polo. I also believe that Drakkar Noir is disgusting, but beyond that I have no knowledge.
1. Life in the Fast Lane
2. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough
3. ...Baby One More Time
4. Romeo and Juliet
5.
6.
7. Sweet Child O' Mine
8. No Scrubs
Billie Jean in the Hotel California with Industrial Disease.
54: So I did. My apologies!
41: Two correct answers!
So Hangin' Tough, Sultans of Swing, and End of the Road are in.
1. Lyin' Eyes
2. Billie Jean
3. Boys
4. Sultans of Swing
5. End of the Road
6. Hangin' Tough
7. November Rain
8. Waterfalls
See how many people like "Boys"? I refute you thus.
Also, I messed up in 42, but not so badly that information was inextricable. You people who are proceeding unscientifically disgust me.
Anyone whose favorite Britney song isn't Toxic DOES NOT UNDERSTAND DANCING.
1. Lyin' Eyes
2. Billie Jean
3. Boys
4. Sultans of Swing
5. End of the Road
6. Hangin' Tough
7. Welcome to the Jungle
8. No Scrubs
66: Don't shoot the messenger. I'm just reporting which songs actually happen to be the best.
i can offer these three 1. Hotel California
2. Liberian girl, 3. Toxic
others, i don't sufficiently like their songs to remember perhaps
Of course it has to be The End of the Road. And I'm quite partial to No Scrubs. No one is suggesting The Right Stuff?
Hmm 70 surprised me.
1. Lyin' Eyes
2. PYT
3. Boys
4. Sultans of Swing
5. End of the Road
6. Hangin' Tough
7. Welcome to the Jungle
8. No Scrubs
People, Billie Jean featured in 11, and heebie said in 14 that 11 had no correct answers ...
Are we talking songs here, or recordings? I'm inclined to say "Boys" is Spears' best recording. Whereas the best song of course has to be one of Max Martin's.
Copy and paste would make this easier.
Take It To The Limit
Beat It
Toxic
Sultans of Swing
End of the Road
Hangin' Tough
Welcome to the Jungle
Waterfalls
I see that 'Oops I Did it Again' is ruled out by your 39 and 40. Richard Thompson thought it was one of the best 10 songs of the millennium.
Heebie, you should not allow partial submissions. But since you have:
1. Lyin' Eyes
2. Beat It
3. Toxic
4. Sultans of Swing
5. End of the Road
6.
7.
8.
(That's half of the possibilities from 67->70)
Actually 73 and 67 have only one thing changed, so I guess that's not disgusting, though since we already know which are the three correct, you can afford to change more of them, and suss out which the new right ones were later.
1. Lyin' Eyes
2. PYT
3. Boys
4. Sultans of Swing
5. End of the Road
6. Hangin' Tough
7. Welcome to the Jungle
8. Creep
Scratch the first line of 78. Upon typing that, I opened up a spreadsheet. But I'm too lazy to put in anything other than the ones that have no right answers.
81: I feel uncomfortable with partial submissions, as well. It feels like people are gaming the system. You've encouraged me to put my foot down. Thanks!
re: 55
My wife likes Boss Bottled and Prada Amber [evidence, those are the two she's bought for me in the past].
The Boss one is lighter and more citrusy/metrosexual I think.
Review: http://www.basenotes.net/ID26120240.html
The Prada is more traditionally masculine, I suspect, but gets a bit sickly sweet if you put too much on by mistake.
I liked the Boss enough to buy it again when I used it up. The Prada I wouldn't.
There's at least one unknown right answer in 5, I'm trying to sort out which.
Perhaps this isn't in the spirit of the game, but: it's not Friday.
I will submit my guess on Friday, in accordance with Internet Traditions.
1. "Busy Being Fabulous"
2. "Heal the World"
3. "E-mail My Heart"
4. "Walk of Life"
5. "I'll Make Love To You"
6. "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)"
7. "Since I Don't Have You"
8. "Don't Pull Out On Me Yet"
I swear I am not being contrarian, these are the best songs. Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's bad, you know. And the concept of a "guilty pleasure" is so condescending that it sickens me. You people should be ashamed of yourselves, and so should anyone who tries to draw attention to themselves with their musical taste.
84: boys as 3) was knocked out in 11. But I guess you can use that as a proxy.
1. Lyin' Eyes
2. Beat It
3. Toxic
4. Sultans of Swing
5. End of the Road
6. You Got It (The Right Stuff)
7. Welcome to the Jungle
8. Red Light Special
Gaming the system.
91: No correct answers. While those may be your opinion of your personal favorites, I choose to stick to the facts.
84: boys as 3) was knocked out in 11. But I guess you can use that as a proxy.
1. Lyin' Eyes
2. Beat It
3. Toxic
4. Sultans of Swing
5. End of the Road
6. You Got It (The Right Stuff)
7. Welcome to the Jungle
8. Red Light Special
Gaming the system.
I do want to commend you on choosing only the world's best musical artists for this quiz, instead of bands that nobody ever heard of, whom people pretend to like because they haven't "sold out".
sorry about the dp. got a comments?x=y error.
1. Lyin' Eyes
2. PYT
3. Piece of Me
4. Sultans of Swing
5. End of the Road

2. Thriller
3. My Prerogative
4. Sultans of Swing
5. End of the Road
6. Hangin' Tough
7. Live and Let Die
8. Creep
And Lyin' Eyes also featured in 11, and heebie said in 14 that 11 had no correct answers ...
Heebie, you haven't made any mistakes here, have you?
If there's a system I don't understand it.
The system is to use the ones we know to have zero correct (eg 11) to determine which are the correct answers. It's simple.
102: I hope not. That would be a wretched mess to untangle. I'm happy to regrade any submission that you're suspicious of.
1. Peaceful Easy Feeling
2. Bad
3. Not A Girl, Not Yet a Woman
4. Sultans of Swing
5. End of the Road
6. Hangin' Tough
7. Paradise City
8. Creep
Lyin' Eyes
Beat It
Toxic
Money For Nothing
End of the Road
The Right Stuff
Welcome to the Jungle
Creep
103: That's not the system I mean. I don't see a common thread in the 4 known songs, is all.
I searched in vain on the NIST website. Where are these in ISO 1000?
Exactly. Since we have something that has 0 right answers, you can use them as filler instead of partial lists. Sorry HG.
Essential oils and base, pick two and mix them yourself. Teak and lime for me.
1. Peaceful Easy Feeling
2. Thriller
3. Happy Birthday
4. Happy Birthday
5. Happy Birthday
6. Happy Birthday

4. Sultans of Swing
5. End of the Road
6. Hangin' Tough
7. Don't Cry
8. Creep
See, 113 isn't gaming the system, that's using the rules to your advantage. I'm okay with that. But blank answers are too...transparent.
1. Desperado
2. PYT
3. My Prerogative
4. Sultans of Swing
5. End of the Road
6. Hangin' Tough

8. Creep
1., 3, 5, 6: all songs by these groups are equally at −459.67 °F on the musical-value scale.
2. What is the best Michael Jackson song?
"Beat it" I suppose.
4. What is the best Dire Straits song?
"Money for Nothin".
7. What is the best Guns-n-Roses song?
I recognize the bare possibility that they rose above absolute zero at some point.
8. What is the best TLC song?
If they did "Shoop shoop", that's sort of cute.
1. Lyin' Eyes
2. Billie Jean
3. I'm a Slave 4 U
4. Sultans of Swing
5. End of the Road
6. Hangin' Tough
7. Don't Cry

I have outsourced this process, by the way ...
115 cheats by naming the same Altered Images song several times.

re: 135
Clare Grogan's influence was 'formative' on a certain generation of young Scottish manhood.
My hunch here is that the Guns n' Roses song has not been guessed once.
These is like a trolley car problem, see. She throws in all these stupid groups to annoy us and throw us off, but it's really a math problem.
The Eagles won the worst band of all time award in my son's circle of friends and family, and that was even before the Big Lebowski came out.

If I was a main page poster at a popular blog, this is EXACTLY what I would do with the slot. Seriously, what better way to make other people actively pay homage to your musical whims? Certainly far better than some top 10 list.
Are we supposed to be guessing Heebie's views or giving our honest answer and hoping we naturally attain ideal Heebie-ness?
1) Take It To The Limit
2) Beat It (although I'll confess to liking The Man In The Mirror)
3) My Prerogative
4) Trick question -- they're all same crappy song! Ummm, OK, if I have to, "Walk of Life".
5) "It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday", but I have a weird love for a capella.
6) Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time -- massively inferior to the Delfonics original, but such a massively great song that it's still better than anything else they ever did.
7) Paradise City
8) Waterfalls!
None of the other
1. After the Thrill is Gone
2. The Way You Make Me Feel
3. Baby One More Time
4. Sultans of Swing
5. End of the Road
6. Hangin' Tough
7. Don't Cry
8. Creep
None of these are correct:
1. Lyin' Eyes,

If this is correct, I just want to state that I have never heard of "Outrageous" before.
I'm pretty sure we've got everything except for Michael nailed down.
No one has suggested "The Girl Is Mine."
I am very confident in 173.
I think you are right as well. aby One Moe Time a red herring for a moment.

Except what was right in 160? One of the verdicts on 154 or 160 is wrong.
This exercise made me like the Eagles more because there were so many great candidates for best song...really hard to choose. It's easy to overlook how many great ones they did until you call them all to mind.
Not even the horrible solo career of Glenn Frey can overshadow that.
As I get older and spend more time on the couch doing nothing, "Peaceful Easy Feeling" starts to move into the front position.

re: 192
Made me think the same about Britney. From Slave4U on she's had a few really great well-produced singles.
192: Check out the link in my 13.
Yeah, it's down to guessing the right Michael Jackson song. Needle in a haystack.
154 graded wrong I think per xyzzy

Except what was right in 160? One of the verdicts on 154 or 160 is wrong.
Shit. I mis-graded 154. It should have been "One correct answer!"
I don't think 195 is compatible with 52.
Yeah, 200/201 should be right if grades on 176 are accurate.
208: but shouldn't 155 be seven then?
209: yeah, I didn't think GnR had a bad hit song, but now I've been reminded.
210: yes, it should.
No fair! Start over!
186: 3
187: 6
190: 7

204.3: 7
C'mon people, think. What is clearly the best Michael Jackson song?
1. One of These Nights
2. Rock With You
3. Baby One More Time
4. Sultans of Swing
5. End of the Road
6. Hangin' Tough
7. Don't Cry
8. Creep
I think that by giving 176.2 seven correct, you told us that "The Way You Make Me Feel" was correct.
155 was graded incorrectly if 200, 201 are correct, which tragically threw me off the trail for "Way You Make Me Feel" for about 30-50 comments.
Ok, on preview, blargh. Heebie, there will be soooo many words about your tastes in Michael Jackson songs.
210: Yes, looks that way. Grades of 155 and 176.2 can't both be right.
re: 211
Everything after Appetite for Destruction is pretty rank in my view, but I am probably an outsider on that. Fastest fall from grace, ever.
Crap, I'm getting batty. I mis-graded 176.
The first has 6 correct, the second has 5 correct.
OK, let's all guess what the best Michael Jackson song is.
nobody's guessed "Earth Song", "Scream", "Ben", or "Blood On the Dance Floor" yet.
Eh, 214 doesn't work. But "Rock With You" and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" are clearly the two best MJ songs.
2. She's Out of My Life
2. In the Closet
2. Give In To Me
I may have misgraded a lot. That may be part of the game. But I was always trying for accuracy.
Ok, so here's an attempt at the No list for Heebie's Michael Jackson song:
Bad
Beat It
Thriller
Remember the Time
Scream
PYT
Billie Jean
Man in the Mirror
Smooth Criminal
Jam
Can You Feel It
Shake Your Body
The Girl Is Mine
Rock With You
She's Out of My Life
Any others that have been definitively rejected?
220: None!
223: None!
225: That list is accurate.
I'm gonna guess Human Nature. If it's not right, everyone should go back and listen to it again -- it's really good.
Everything after Appetite for Destruction is pretty rank in my view, but I am probably an outsider on that. Fastest fall from grace, ever.
Right, I think that's what I meant by "hit". I had erased all the post-Appetite hits from my mind. Until today.
AFD was totally distinctive, and then they became an anonymous hair band overnight. Bizarre.
we know it's not "Stranger in Moscow" or "Heal the World".
2. The Doggone Girl Is Mine
2. Are You The Ghost of Jealousy?
2. Human Nature
2. Rockin' Robin
2. Jam
225 cont.
Don't Stop Til You Get Enough
The Way You Make Me Feel
Black or White
"Don't Stop" has also been rejected.
Heebie, has the MJ song in question appeared on this thread?
Dirty Diana seems to be out, also. Can't think why. Or is it ...
This better not actually be a Jackson Five song.
2. What More Can I Give
2. This Place Hotel
wow, I've heard 26 of these songs, but never "Human Nature".
wow, I've heard 26 of these songs, but never "Human Nature".
I'm gonna guess Human Nature...everyone should go back and listen to it again -- it's really good.
Very true! Heebie ends on a high note!
Clearly she likes slow, emotional ballads. Something to keep in mind if you ever want to sing to her.
Wow. Come on, let's have a sing-a-long!
228: That's a ballad, isn't it? Heebie, you chose a fucking ballad as Michael Jackson's best song? That's like saying that a high batting average off leftie pitchers was the apex of Michael Jordan's athletic achievements.
"Human Nature" is one of Madonna's best songs, but not THE best.
I think you are all winners, because that was a true collaborative effort.
you chose a fucking ballad as Michael Jackson's best song
It has already been established that Heebie cares nothing for dancing.
242: to pay us back, Heebie should post a Youtube video of her singing at least one of these songs.
um, My Wild Irish Invalid (1989) at the Parallel Film Guide.
249: AWB, selections from Off the Wall are certainly acceptable, but you have to admit anything off an album other than Thriller is heterodox.
It has already been established that Heebie cares nothing for dancing
But...that booty! It's famous! And...it doesn't shake?
OK, now guess my favorite songs by:
1. The Fall
2. Guided by Voices
3. Bob Dylan
4. Anal Cunt
I'll come back in a month and start narrowing them down for you.
246: But then why wasn't the entire list composed of actual ballad-y type artists?
More importantly, what does the correct version of this list look like? I would like to venture the following:
1. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough
2. Billie Jean
3. Toxic
4. Money for Nothing
5. Motownphilly
6. Smooth Criminal
7. Sweet Child o' Mine
8. Creep (or possibly No Scrubs)
I only just realized that it's not Friday.
I dance, I dance. But you can dance to "C'mon Ride That Train" just as easily as "Rock With Me". (I know, I know, "C'mon Ride That Train" is a pretty good song in its own right.) My point being, the best song in not necessarily the most danceable, because you can dance to all kinds of crap with a catchy beat.
Don't be defensive, Heebie. Have the courage of your misguided convictions.
I must reiterate, these are not my choices. I am merely enforcing what is objectively true.
254.7 is heinous.
Basically everything else on AfD is better. I say this as someone who learned SCoM at one point, in order to play it in my teenage crappy bar band.
257: I believe that was, like, the first conversation we had.
The lesson from this thread is how to validate your taste in a forum where it would otherwise be harshly criticized.
256: You make a good point, which is that "C'mon Ride the Train" should be used as a segue from "Billie Jean" and "Motownphilly" to "Tootsie Roll" when having your dance party.
254.7 is heinous.
I always thought so, but have been repeatedly told that I am wrong.
260: Didja do all the harmonics? That's a fun one to learn.
The idea that SCoM isn't one of the best GNR recordings is laughable, but I can imagine that if all of their songs were being played by a teenage Scottish bar band, that would be one of the less enjoyable ones.
260: Fair enough, I was going to replace that one with a Michael Jackson song as well, but held back because "Sweet Child o' Mine" led to some really great sing-a-longs back in college.
Replace it with "Working Day and Night" or perhaps "Rock With You" for your purposes.
253: I'll lay mine down
1. The Fall - Wrong Place, Right Time
2. Guided by Voices - Blimps Go 90
3. Bob Dylan - Tangled Up In Blue
4. Anal Cunt - I don't know this band. Are they nice to listen to?
Can Jackson 5 songs count as Michael Jackson songs?
And the answer to 7 is, objectively, Paradise City, but I bet some of you slow-danced at your proms to Patience.
254.7 is heinous.
Boy howdy.
Can Jackson 5 songs count as Michael Jackson songs?
Obviously not, because then Heebie would have had to pick I Want You Back, ABC, or The Love You Save.
Now that I think about Guns 'N' Roses, I'm very glad that I spent those years listening to rap.
A charming version of 'Toxic' on the ukulele.
re: 266
Probably, I can't remember. I definitely remember learning the intro stuff, the basic chordal stuff [obviously] and the a few chunks of the solo. Not enough of the solo to play it note for note, but enough to fool someone who didn't know better that I was playing it note for note.
re: 267
It's just what they are good at. It's an OK-ish song, but the vocals are whiny and the main guitar melody, while 'iconic', gets irritating after a while. They were much better on the sarcastic, up-tempo material. IMHO.
Heebie likes dancing to ballads because she's a girl and that's how they are. Weren't you ever in ninth grade?
Or has the world changed during the last 50 years?
I have to say, I feel very well understood in 165.
278 was me. Where'd my name go?
We must be doing the "Time Warp, Again" because I was pretty sure today was Monday. I didn't think I was that drunk last night.
I wish it were Friday. I am so not feeling this whole back to work thing. Is anyone else panicked by the advancing new semester? If it were Friday I would be looking forward to picnicking with Otto and brunching in the Mission with my pal Susan, with whom I saw Iron Man. I thought Iron Man wasn't really substantial (tastes great; less filling), but awesome in it's own over the top Robert Downey Fucking Jr. way.
Has there been a consensus about Tropic Thunder? Pineapple Express? Are these movies about which we should be excited, or should I just wait for The Watchmen and Spirit.
The Watchmen, from the director of 300? No.
Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron? Not familiar with it.
Tropic Thunder and Pineapple Express are both going to be funny. Either one might be awesome but probably not both. The Watchmen movie is going to be terrible based on extrapolation from V for Vendetta and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (I've not seen or read From Hell).
Spirit's anyone's game.
Speaking as someone completely unfamiliar with the source material, I would say V for Vendetta was at least 100 times as good as League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. However, Wrongshore lumps them together.
The conclusion: if you are a fan of the source material, don't bother with the movies at all. You've learned your lesson already.
I meant this movie, The Spirit. More Frank Miller.
Matt Damon voiced Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron. I have watched every fucking kid's movie ever made because of the aunt/nanny thing.
I am in the process of uploading pictures to Flickr to add to the Unfogged pool. I don't think I ever did before because I figured that no one would care. Probably no one does. But I baked a fucking awesome pie and well, why the hell not share.
Every one wants to see a picture of a pie.
Although if you've already eaten the source material, you may not be impressed.
(Now that I think of it, I didn't see LXG, but the critical consensus was strongly against. V for Vendetta was both not true enough to the source and also too true. I have complained here before.)
I am ashamed to admit that I didn't see Sin City or V for Vendetta, too afraid that the movies would destroy my love for the source material. Misplaced anxiety? Should I see these movies?
I'm trying to find flattering pictures of myself sans boyfriend. It really hurts even more that I looked prettier in those pictures.
Photoshop your next boyfriend onto his face.
I am ashamed to admit that I didn't see Sin City or V for Vendetta, too afraid that the movies would destroy my love for the source material. Misplaced anxiety? Should I see these movies?
I don't think there's any way seeing the movie will make you like the source material more. It'll just be frustrating. So don't bother. The movie is not made for you.
I'm trying to find flattering pictures of myself sans boyfriend. It really hurts even more that I looked prettier in those pictures.
Cover his face with a Guy Fawkes mask.
boyfriend s/b "ex-boyfriend." Augh!
287: Actually Sin City, while being not-particularly faithful, is kind of awesome on the neural level. Walking out of it, I felt as if I could stop a car with my bare hands. I was talked down.
I didn't see Sin City or V for Vendetta, too afraid that the movies would destroy my love for the source material. Misplaced anxiety? Should I see these movies?
I thought Sin City was really great, visually, but I don't know the source material.
BL, you should photoshop Matt Damon's face on your ex-boyfriend.
269.4: The song you're looking for is "Pepe the Gay Waiter."
I am ashamed to admit that I didn't see Sin City or V for Vendetta, too afraid that the movies would destroy my love for the source material. Misplaced anxiety? Should I see these movies?
I was only tangentially familiar with Sin City pre-film, but the movie seemed to bring out the best of Miller while escaping some of his worst tendencies. (Unlike certain other Miller adaptations I could name.) V for Vendetta was very good; I still like the originals better, but I'm not religious enough about it to dislike the movie, which does a competent job of updating the whole concept.
I enjoyed both the original Sin City and the movie. I don't think The Spirit will benefit from the same treatment, however.
281 - Belle, if you have any love for Eisner's Spirit at all, my guess is that you'll want to stay far, far away from the movie adaption. (The Kitchen Sink New Adventures of the Spirit, with stories by Neil Gaiman, Paul Pope, Alan Moore, etc., is fun, though, as is Alan Moore's Tomorrow Stories homage, "Greyshirt".) It looks like an 90-minute reminder that Frank Miller is a sexist ass who is confused about how women's bodies are supposed to fit together.
the movie seemed to bring out the best of Miller while escaping some of his worst tendencies
I think this is right. I get the impression that he has become basically a raging vortex of those worst tendencies, of late, and gone completely off the rails.
297: I think that happened earlier than most people suspected. I'm ashamed to say it only really became clear to me when I read a copy of 300, which was in a similar time frame to as the whole are-you-retarded-I'm-the-goddamned-Batman thing.
I was just looking for that link, to illustrate my very point!
Or, rather, the whole amazing extended exegesis at... the Invincible Super-Blog? Somewhere.
296: confused about how women's bodies are supposed to fit together.
The instructions are in the bottom of the box.
I love comic book stuff so much that I usually end up watching it and being disappointed. It is like the nature of things. Although lately I've been really much more into reading those sad sack comic books from the likes of Chris Ware.
OK, my photostream here, and a few added to the deggofnU pool.
I think I should get a Flickr account.
Belle is sure to be disappointed by Michael Bay's $160-million CGI spectacular Rusty Brown (starring Jim Carrey as Rusty and Eugene Levy as Chalky White).
i like BL's place, cute and cozy and neat
and her ex is stupid that lets her pass by
i could never make things look cute or cozy, alas
1. Desperado
2. Man in the mirror
3. Oops, I did it again
4. Money for nothing
5. End of the road
6. Who cares?
7. Sweet child o' mine
8. Unpretty.
Did we sufficiently mock "End of the Road" above? If not, consider it done.
Aw, AWB. I'm actually listening to it right now. Very ironic.
I have a friendly date with a guy from OK Cupid who is cool with being "just friends" (my profile is not listing me as looking for more) tomorrow for fried chicken sandwiches and pie at Bakesale Betty's. He seems nice. Do gooder civil rights lawyer/ER nurse guy (not kidding). I am so far cool with making new friends and hanging out with men, but not yet ready to date and definitely still in the rebounding off the walls stage. Still going to be single and sad for the foreseeable future, although it is fun to hang out with people again. I am still going to wear a sundress that will, I hope, be quite flattering.
Man, life moves on whether you're ready for it to or not.
i could never make things look cute or cozy, alas
There's still time, read! Don't give up!
BL, if you read French and like Chris Ware, maybe try BD. Schuiten+Peeters series of cities is nice. Also Moebius' Incal.
Alas, I do not read French. I suppose I could try though, with my handy dandy dictionary.
And I agree with Otto--don't give up, read! I am not great at interior design, and I have a grad student's budget. I have found though that keeping things tidy goes a long way. I like that "Method" line of cleansers.
There are so many great Francophone comic book artists right now. I wish I read French.
No one else goes for "Unpretty" for TLC? I always thought that was their most sophisticated song musically.
I bet on the mongoose.
Stupid, in retrospect.
305: I love that there's a link for "Wrong image?" at the bottom. Yes, it's wrong in so many ways.
I like that "Method" line of cleansers.
Method, Schmethod. Commercial products should be employed only where baking soda, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, water, and elbow grease have proved ineffective.
Damn lazy Gen Yers.
That reminds me that I have to put some vinegar and baking soda down my bathtub drain again soon.
Mrs Myers Clean Day geranium dishwashing liquid smells good, though.
If you don't clean at all, it doesn't get any worse after four years.
Mrs Myers Clean Day geranium dishwashing liquid smells good, though.
Mmm, geranium. I am confident that someday I will be the kind of person who makes homemade dishwashing liquid to which I add essential oils.
That reminds me that I have to put some vinegar and baking soda down my bathtub drain again soon.
Cleaning and science fun, all in one! My sister's baby shower this weekend turned into a giant science experiment because there was dry ice to keep ice cream cold; once the ice cream was put away, there was all this dry ice to play with. So, bubbling cauldrons and taking dents out of cars and making crazy noises by touching metal to the dry ice, AND filling up plastic bottles with water and dry ice and watching them expand and then shooting them 50 feet up in the air. Fun!
325: Ah, Quentin Crisp. Emerson in a different guise: "To know all is not to forgive all. It is to despise everybody."
322: don't forget lye or Gamma-butylactone!
Those non-Oreo cookies look yuuuuummmmmmmy. Can you put the recipe on AWB's wiki, Belle? I'm about to have a kitchen again and I'm really excited.
(And yay you for having a friend-date. It's good to flex your muscles even if you aren't ready to date-date again.)
If it were Friday I would be looking forward to picnicking with Otto and brunching in the Mission with my pal Susan, with whom I saw Iron Man.
I'm hurt, Belle.
Mrs. Myers gernanium stuff is vile. I do not want my cleaning supplies to smell like overwrought florals, thankyouverymuch.
You people who are proceeding unscientifically disgust me.
You people who have the patience to figure this kind of thing out disgust me. That said, Heebie has exactly the right attitude. Can someone please inform me of the objectively correct answers?
333:
1. One of These Nights
2. Human Nature
3. Baby One More Time
4. Sultans of Swing
5. End of the Road
6. Hangin' Tough
7. Don't Cry
8. Creep
It looks like an 90-minute reminder that Frank Miller is a sexist ass who is confused about how women's bodies are supposed to fit together.
This seems apropos.
I converted the food wiki to 2.0, BTW, so if anyone wants access, just email me. You have to be invited now, but you get your very own password. (And sorry, existing users, but I think you have to make up a password now.) Rumor has it the editor's a bit easier to use, and there are folders now, which we could use for organization. If anyone wants to futz with it, feel free.
In fact, I like folders better than tags, because you can click around a lot easier. I'll get on it.
Oh, nevermind. You can only put it in one folder at a time, so tags are still necessary. I'll make some large groupings though, like "Desserts," but for specific things, use tags.
I just realized there are no chicken or beef recipes on the wiki. Not one. You are a pork-n-seafood lot.
Oh, the email access thing also means that if you used a fake email account, you can't access it now. Email me to rejoin, if you like.
Sorry for absence. Do not yell at me. I was talking to the ex-boyfriend, as we are trying to figure out how to get back together by talking about our feelings a lot. Oy.
I added a couple of recipes to AWB's wiki. Am thinking of adding the chocolate pudding recipe too, as it is pretty awesome. I have a lot of milk to use up by this week. Rice pudding time! I never thanked Katherine for her recipe. Thank you, Katherine!
To be honest I think I'm a better baker than I am a cook, so I think I'm going to be contributing mostly sweet recipes. I do have a recipe for roasted pork shoulder though that I like a lot though. But there's enough pork recipes, it seems.
And hooray for Witt having a kitchen!
No, bring the pork, BL! Two pork recipes aren't enough to be comprehensive.
Pork shoulder, adobo style now up. I now have to search my documents for my chocolate pudding recipe. I made it for W-lfs-n. He can vouch for its goodness. Also, where is that recipe for the oreos, which were teh awesome.
Why isn't W-lfs-n on this wiki?! I want the recipe for his peach frangipane tarte.
W-lfs-n fears his recipes would be written in too free a form. He clearly has not read my recipes, in which I ramble on for a while about how I found the ingredients, and all the anxieties I had about putting them together, as well as amounts that are mostly like "some." Also, some things on the wiki are not, strictly speaking, recipes, but just "Hey, here's a way to do a thing."
343: Nay, nay, he fears the misplacement of a comma in the execution.
Technically, W-lfs-n is on the wiki. He just hasn't posted anything.
We can do that? Awesome. I invented a pasta salad recipe the other day. Like, it could have turned out really badly, but instead it turned out really well. Who knew that marinating cut up chicken in balsamic vinegar and fennel for 5 minutes and then carmelizing it on high heat in coriander seed flavored oil would work, and work well with grape seed tomatoes, arugula, farfalle, basil, and goat cheese tossed with lots of good olive oil and sea salt.
Yes, that is a free form recipe. I'd appreciate one from W-lfs-n, nonetheless.
Oh, and AWB, I get a lot of my sweets recipes from Smitten Kitchen if you're looking for another external link.
Oh, yeah, SK is great. I think I got my punitions recipe there.
I kind of regret revealing my rebounding pie-friend-date under my public pseud, because now I won't want to talk about how it went tomorrow unless I go presidential, and I am so lame and transparent.
Any of "Beat it", "Billie Jean", or "Don't stop till you get enough" would have been an acceptable choice for Micheal Jackson. Choosing a f'ing ballad for one of the biggest dance floor assassins of the last 30 years indicates terminal whiteness. I am deeply deeply worried.
I still question the premise, that the term "best song" has any meaning for half of those groups. Heebie has been dividing by zero, if you ask me, or squaring the circle, or one of those other big no-nos. (I'm trying to "get through to her" by talking her peculiar language, see.)
Heebie has been dividing by zero, if you ask me, or squaring the circle, or one of those other big no-nos.
I'd say it's more like the square root of a negative: it conforms to a set of abstract rules, and even has some practical utility for certain esoteric applications, but is so far removed from any real world experience as to be meaningless for any normal person.
321:Bio-KleenBac-Out with lime extract and enzyme cultures is a miracle product. You can use it to get rid of pet accident odors, and you canpuritdown teh drain overnight. I had some blood on a garment. I rinsed off as much as I could, but then I treated it with the Bac-Out. Afew hours later, the stain was totally gone---even before I had put it in the wash.. Shout is not that good with blood.
Was the blood on your garment related to the pet "accident"?
BG was trying to identify the Montauk monster.
No, it was much moremundane than that. But it works to get rid of pee odor so that dogs won't think that it's okay to pee on the carpet if they've already done it once.
My space key is notresponding toless-than-firm touches today. Argh!
See if your keyboard responds to Bac-Out.
Sometimes keyboards get all dirty and want you to play rough with them (you might try cleaning it...)
