What election? Is there an election today?
Don't let on to W-lfs-n that I can't read this, but would anyone care to translate?
3: My Arabic is a little rusty, but I think it says: "Hah, infidel, you have fallen into our trap and elected the 12th Imam."
I can sound it out but know nothing of the meaning. Thanks, Hebrew school!
Is it intentional that the second word sounds like "Ben"?
"Ben" is "poop" in Japanese, incidentally.
The first one means "And the son of Avinoam came with mighty waters"; the poet is referring via allusion and paronomasia to lightning. The second means "send a lightning, my God, and disperse them."
Alles klar?
1: There's a ward by-election in 2 days time, but I miss being eligible to vote in it by the width of three streets. With cars and houses and everything.
You're probably not eligible to vote there either. I wouldn't worry.
Klar as Kristall. (How would you say that, so klar wie Kristall?)
You see, the son of Avinoam was named "Baraq", and "baraq" means "lightning".
Ah, I see. You should send that to the Obama campaign; maybe he could use it in his speech tonight.
Sounds like the sort of thing that will be convincing evidence for Obama's election-night revelation that he is the Antichrist.
The McCain spam list that I'm somehow on just sent me, out of the blue, the names and phone numbers of 10 voters in Danville, Virginia.
14: Quick! Call them to remind them that Republicans vote on the 5th this year.
15: "A one-humped camel makes a one humped ben. A two-humped camel makes a two humped ben."
too much grammar policing makes a no-humped ben
Weird amounts of nervousness given that I have no doubt Obama will win. I'm trying to decide which option is best for my mental health: (a) turn off the internets and get some work done; (b) start drinking; (c) all of the above.
Speaking of Grammar Police. DCist posted Halloween pics and 'smasher is in there as is spack.
If I thought that "turn off the internets and get some work done" was actually an option, I would be taking it right now.
7: Not really. It's more a morpheme meaning "excreta" generally.
Oh, to continue my digression, there's a pic of Tom in his wicked cool Doc Oc costume.
22: Well, unchi on you. I say it's close enough.
Are you kidding, Merganser? A morpheme meaning "excreta" is even better.
Armsmasher's costume is decidedly strange.
"Party excreter" is less traditional, and I'm nothing if not a creature of tradition.
Party defecator gets 7 results. Party defecater, none.
24: Well shucks, if you believe something in your heart who can say it's not true.
You're one of Heebie's students, aren't you?
Any last minute campaign news ? Is Barry really a Scientologist, not a muslim ?
The captive in elevator tv headline news-lite said something to alarm the Clinging Bitters - something about retroactvely banning their guns. Previous Barry news items on this channel have been momentum positive, mostly about big rallies and surging in the polls. Today's blurb is an ill-timed November surprise.
(I should not type on my phone)
Clinging Bitters are cocktail additives made from the fruits of brambles, oder?
So klar wie Kristol. Ha.
Aren't those dots in the text for illiterates? Sort of like training wheels?
The vowels or whatever they're called don't appear in the Torah, IIRC, but I'm quoting from medieval Hebrew poets (natch) and my source has them. I don't know what the custom at the time was. Haaretz coesn't seem to use them. Basically, I don't know from Hebrew.
37: And Teresa Nielsen Hayden claims to have invented disemvoweling! Call her out for the anti-Semite she so clearly is!
It makes me way sad that The Poor Man is still calling itself The Toot now that The Toot has passed away. I know I'm going to cry no matter what happens tonight, but if BHO pulls through, it's going to be so so sad to know that The Toot didn't get to see it.
Spike: 'Ron Paul is the real maverick!"
39 - On the upside, she died knowing she'd raised a fine young man, seen him through college, Law school, seen him elected to the State Senate, then the Senate of the USA, and finally nominated for president. That's no too shabby.
39: I don't get it. Is there actually a connection? Was BHO's grandmother really nicknamed "The Toot"?
Tutu is Hawaiian for Grandma, in a nickname way.
Where are my leaked exit poll numbers, darnit? I need a fix!
Since I wasn't likely to be doing any work anyway, I'm kind of glad today is a state holiday. Rather civilized. But awfully quiet around here--son's school and wife's employer are not so much with the civilization.

Where are my leaked exit poll numbers, darnit? I need a fix!
Alright Spike, but this is to go no farther than here:
Obama 203, McCain 19.
Fuck. How did that happen?
The usual way, I expect.
My Hebrew's a little rusty, but I believe it says "History shows that a naive and weak foreign policy has resulted in tragic outcomes for the Jewish people."
Best I could come up with was alleged Colorado exit polling - 52 Obama, 47 McCain.
Please tell me one of you NY unfoggeders has gotten your free sex toy in return for voting? I'm dying to know what the "maverick" is like, and I'm really jealous of the free silver bullet. So much better than a cup of coffee, y'all.
53: Thanks for calling my attention to that! There's a Babeland in my neighborhood. Yay.
Attention:
GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
OK, that's better. Some election stress relieved. You may now return to your regularly scheduled cock jokes.
Tutu is Hawaiian for Grandma, in a nickname way.
So Tut and Gramps were his grandparents! What about Ray and Choom Gang?
They're saying the lines in Detroit are five hours long. This is fucked up.
FIVE HOURS LONG?
Seems to me that maybe these places that had early voting for a week because the limited number of polling stations would otherwise be swamped, should have taken the Pennylvania approach instead and INCREASED the number of polling stations.
So much better than a cup of coffee, y'all.
We went to Ben and Jerry's, only to find a sign saying that the free cone event doesn't start until 5:00. BOO.
A café in sf is giving away a free bottle of beer to voters, but you have to order something else to get in on it.
And so it begins. First polls have just closed in KY and IN.
C and I have made ourselves comfortable and are settled down for a late night. Fingers crossed for you all.
The other election thread is totally lame.
36: The dots are not for illiterates, although they do aid non-native speakers/children in understanding words; actually, most hebrew speakers nowadays don't even know the rules governing the exact use of the dots ('nikud'). Every edition of poetry in hebrew, though, has them, for reasons esoteric and complex (don't know why, really).
Happy election, y'all! Hope Israel will follow in your footsteps to sanity..
YEAH! Vigo County Indiana is in the house with 36% of precincts reporting and Obama up. Go Vigo County.
Vigo County, IN now at 54% with Obama still leading. YEAH! Come on Vigo County , you can do it, you can be the first Obama county to report in the USA.
Come on Vigo, now at 69%, with Obama still up. But ass-licking Steuben County is at 68% reporting with a McCain lead. DAMN YOU STEUBEN.
Vigo is a good sign it went 53-46 Bush in '04, now at 57-42 Obama with 80% in. Terre Haute in the county and Indiana State. who did Larry Bird support?
And Steuben running 10% points ahead of 2004 as well.
Where does one find the county-by-county 2004 numbers, Stormcrow?
Vigo is now at 80% reporting with Obama up by 57%. Rural Indiana is looking amazingly good given that Indianapolis and Gary haven't started to come in yet. Obama neck and neck. Vigo County!!!!!!
For those wondering why I'm trolling this, a quote:
"The county is one of the best bellwether regions for voting U.S. presidential elections; it has voted for the winning candidate in every election since 1960."
I have them on CNN
http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/pages/results/states/IN/P/00/county.000.html
For instanc eis beginning of Indiana table.
Whoa. CNN has some hologram technology that's actually pretty sweet. The future has arrived, once again.
Cosma actually has any data you might want about anything ever.
71: Only caution on Vigo is that it has Indiana State in it. So youth vote and all that, although Terre Haute is a big enough city that the school does not dominate results.
72: beaten by Stormcrow.
75: Actually, I hate data, but I hated that damn 2004 red-blue map more.
Obama also running 10 poijnts ahead in Chesterfield County Virginia (Richmond suburbs). In very rural Virginia & Kentucky counties - he is running about even with Kerry. (Obama must be underperforming in those because they think he is a flipflopper.... that's it.)
78: Jesus, don't watch TV or listen to the radio!! You could get seriously hurt that way.
78: Jesus, don't watch TV or listen to the radio!! You could get seriously hurt that way.
Someone on MSNBC was saying that Republicans expect Elizabeth Dole to lose. I think the NC polls are still open, so that probably doesn't mean anything.
80/81: Streaming audio, actually. I'm still too fond of my Macbook to fling it across the room, but it's getting tougher. OTOH, the news is sounding good enough that that helps.
If Obama won 48% of whites in IN, he won the state.
I am getting 7-12% spreads on most counties, Kerry to Obama, but really rural Kentucky and Virginia it is more like 0-4% (still Obama gaining).
what's going to happen, unfogged?
Tell me everything will be OK
Stormcrow, you work fast. It does look like he's running at least 10 points ahead in the white parts of Indiana.
what's going to happen, unfogged?
Tell me everything will be OK
I'm fucking bored already. Doesn't anything interesting ever happen.

Instant call on PA. Obama wins the presidency.
Who called PA?
max
['South Carolina has honky solidarity.']
C has retired to bed. Just you and me now, internet.
I'm eating a jalapeño to keep calm. NH and Penn down! Bam, bam!
I believe that Halford bet that O would take PA, and that Mary Catherine was his counterparty.
110 -- Yep. MC owes some deserving kids in South Central LA some cash. Or, just send it to me!
Obama has to win one of OH, VA, FL, NC, IN, or two out of three of CO, NM, NV. Any of those called and it's official.
PA call. Those motherfuckers better have it solid. CNN has not called it yet.
Fox just called New Hampshire for Obama!
max
['Woo hoo!']
CNN showing McCain election night party being entertained by the Phoenix Boys' Choir right now.
Crap, I've only got one beer. I may have to break into the liquor.
I just put in 2 1/2 hrs of GOTV. I'd rather go to the dentist.
Someone on TV should mention that the odds are about 30 to 1 against McCain, and should say what SP said in 113. But they won't.
I'm following the Senate and House, and the long-shot Presidential states like GA and AZ.
Kay hagan trouncing dole, says cnn
Yes! There is no God after all
Time to go across the street and buy some beer. This is all still too stressful. Agreed that those fuckers better be right about PA. Though I think they might be. Still, can't take the disappointment. And I really want to see the Indianans and other erstwhile Reds stick the motherfucking knife through the Republican party.
Oh, Fox: Hagen over Dole, big.
max
['Fox also discussing why, shockingly, the voters haven't blamed the Democrats for the last two years.']
Hagan called over Dole in NC. Apo's on the floor passed out.
What is happening in Virginia? I'm not in front of a tv.
119: SP, drink the cheap booze, you won't taste the difference.
Obama is gonna win PA, it's just that CNN is lagging and I can't find MSBNC channel.

Also, McConnell in Kentucky.

AP has called MO Gov. for Jay Nixon, the Democrat. A good thing.
123: To me, it's more amazing than stressful. I never thought I would see the day. My earliest memory of anything real related to civil rights (as opposed to stuff studied in the classroom) was the Little Rock school desegregation in 1957, when I was 16.
Getting kids into class then required the 101st Airborne. That Obama got this far half a century later boggles my mind, much less that he could very well become the president.
And, he's articulate.
MSNBC called PA based on what? I looked at the story on their site, and it doesn't say. The PA SoS doesn't show any reporting at all yet.
133, woo!
My dad informs me that my mother didn't vote, which had to have helped with that.
Hey guys, I'm at HQ. They're handing tickets to the rally out like gobstoppers. I've got a couple spare. Anyone want them and able to make it downtown in the next hour or two?
Fox has finally called PA for Obama. Also calling Hagan over E Dole. No little blue electoral pills for Liddy!
My kids had some awesome election commentary earlier that I videotaped, I have to put it up some time. Example- "Obama will win Arkansas because it's on top of Louisiana." Kid could have been an analyst for the Clinton campaign.
136: Blume, where are your folks? I'm in KC
Fox NOW calling PA for Obama. (Also IL for O., Ark. for McCain... damn!) Kerry win in MA. Pryor (D) wins in Ark.

So I guess networks call some states based purely on exit polls, even with zero results?
For VA, Richmond hasnt reported. It will be overwhelming Obama. neither has Va Beach.
I think Fox called GA for Chambliss. Fucker.
It seems like NBC has the fastest trigger on calls, in both directions- they called GA for McCain first.
Still amused to see N. Dakota listed as a battleground state.
Housing prices in ND have been skyrocketing and people want Obama to do something about it. The $10,000 home is a thing of the past.
McCain's goose almost cooked.

Virginia, Indiana, and Georgia aren't looking as good as I'd hoped. Hopefully this will change as more of the count comes in.
by my scientific polling method (looking out of my window), east london are not on the whole sitting up late watching for the results: apart from the prostitutes' flats i can hardly see any lights on at all
though people might be listening to little radios under the bedclothes -- i wouldn't see that
my immediate neighbour is playing 20 jazz records, so he might be up late for results
a very noisy mouse is gnawing on something on the other side of the room
I don't want all this "battleground states too close to call" bullshit. I want to read headlines about a MOTHERFUCKING LANDSLIDE.

Obama 193,241 48%
McCain 204,715 51%

538's projections have held up well so far. Nate Silver is so getting laid tonight.
Surprise, surprise, Tim Mahoney loses. Dick. I think that's the only R gain.
Okay, South Dakota called for McCain by NBC.

Elizabeth Township had some artisanally hand-massaged voters, let me tell you. We contacted the identified Obama supporters three times each this weekend.
God, I wish Brokaw would stop pretending McCain still has a chance, worried about where McCain will make up the one EV if he loses Omaha. People will watch until 11 for the official call, there's no need to be stupid. (Katie Couric too.)

What's that about?
Cities report late compared to more rural areas and Obama gets his huge margins from cities.
268: Fred Barnes is waxing poetic about Sarah Palin on Fox News right now.
Oh please don't throw me into that briar bush rally around Palin, Republicans. That would be terrible for us, you'll fucking crush us in 2012. I'm scared, very scared.
NPR too calls VA. IN still a nail-biter; it looks as though most of the remaining vote is in Obama territory.
You mean he gets his margins from the fake America.
268: Fred Barnes is waxing poetic about Sarah Palin on Fox News right now.
FAZ liveblog about Palin:
Will eigentlich niemand etwas über Sarah Palin sagen?
I like the dig about the media at Fox.
Poor areas in big cities report late. Florida is gonna drop soon. I don't think NC is gonna go our way, unless they are mainly behind in black precincts.
Not liking the voting machines at all.

11 pm ET coming up. Get ready to stick that fork in McCain.
304 in Babel Fish:
Does nobody want to actually say to something about Sarah Palin? But, finally, at Fox News it is appreciated. The media, say the medium people of Fox, were debt that them had to rush with such a bad image by the election campaign. It arrived nevertheless so good with the religious, worth-conservative core of the republicans. That can ask it then in four years again to the choice dance.
Obama moves ahead in Indiana. Finally!

['Woo woo!']
Ha. Germans are so good at those deadpan digs.
Josh Marshall has degenerated into a giddy stand-up routine. Right now he's asking, "Why can't Obama close the deal?"
Wow, the look on Rachel Maddow's face as Chris Matthews blathers on about Obama being black is just priceless.
This has been a great victory for nonpartisanship, moderation, and centrism, but there's a grave risk that the worthless, criminal Democrats will fail to understand that.
OBAMA WINS! OBAMA WINS! OBAMA WINS!

['WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!']
Holy shit, the Democratic challenger Tom Perriello up by a mere 500 votes with 97% in! God I hope he beats Virgil Goode.
Wait, wins what?
A NEW CAR!

['Barack Obama, c'mon down!']
FUCK YEAH! Thanks to everyone on here who volunteered, donated, cajoled, or simply voted.
291: 289: you did it though, LB! If not for you they would have had to wait 10 or so minutes after the polls closed to call PA.
Yeah this is the story. Pennsylvania was the McCain-Palin closing strategy state (it's "down" to 13% margin right now).
My thighs are still burning. My last area was in some of those tight little valleys with a bunch of houses in places where only a 'burgher would build 'em. And then they'd have 20 steps up to the front door from the road. Literally the last one had the door 3 stories up. I split the difference.
Fucking awesome. Hasn't sunk in yet.
I swear to you, I just watched Keith Olbermann say that Obama's election is a repudiation of 200 years of American tyranny. I need to see that again to be sure I heard what I thought I heard.
I couldn't resist the urge to go outside and set off firecrackers, but people appear to be sleeping, so I only blew up one.
John Lewis made me cry. People outside here are shouting and waving in the street, honking their horns.
I hope that Maddow and Olbermann manage to disappear Chris Matthews.
Gregory is more vulnerable than Matthews, but less obnoxious.
To say nothing of Scarborough.
321: True. Allegheny County is a hilly, hilly, hilly place.
Yeah, I'm going to have to take a shot. And I hate shots.
Obama plans to bring the country together. No mention of the hog farm he'll need if he wants to accomplish this task. I'll be there for them, though.
Also: time to de-friend all the random high school acquaintances who just posted facebook status mesages about praying for America's troubled future and how the country has turned away from god.
Ah yes, the 23-year-old Guatemalan rum.... forgot I still had that.
Holy shit, I am actually feeling proud to be an American.
Well, CNN web site has choked but last time I say, Obama had jumped ahead in NC.
Re: Becks' shame at America's lousy voting system: it's pathetic that California put O. over the top, because FL, IN and MO were still out. That's fucking ridiculous.

['But cool for Californians!']
NBC panned over Jesse Jackson's face in the crowd. His face was scrunched up, cheeks all wet with tears. It was beautiful.
McCain's party is invite-only. I guess they didn't want the rubes calling out "kill him" about the next President of the United States.
Oh this is good, McCain supporters remain classless in defeat.
McCain's concession is, so far, the best speech I've heard him give.
337: Port Ellen '74. Paid a dollar a year for it.
David Brooks was looking sicklier than usual. He did his small best to put some kind of creepy little curse on Obama, though.
McCain seems to be conceding in a pretty decent way, beyond the call of duty.
Good ol' McCain. Yes, he's an asshole, but unlike Bush, he really is an American patriot.
did maccain just joke that he's going to buy the farm pretty soon?
Did Ted Stevens win? I wonder if Palin would run for his seat in a special election.
Maybe the rubes bought some tickets from a scalper and got in after all.
And the booing resumes. They really are assholes.
Goooooo Stanley's slacker roommate! Way to deliver Virginia!##!@!@#
did bush just say "congratulation to you and your good bride"
?
This better be a fucking good speech, Barry.
God, I would've been ashamed of that crowd of supporters, were they mine. He's up there doing this big self-consciously gracious speech, and the fuckers are booing.
346: Now there is a distinction without a difference.
Anyway, congratulations my newly minted socialist siblings.
God, I would've been ashamed of that crowd of supporters, were they mine.
I got the impression he was indeed.
Is the minister going to end with God Damn America?
and most of the speech was 'thanks supporters, you're great."
Does this mean we have a mandate for socialism?
I, for one, welcome our new socialist overlords.
Holy shit, I'm crying, and that doesn't happen often.
Looks like probably more Bachmann. She's been steady at +4%. It's a pretty homogeneous district, I think. Madia doesn't look so good either.
Damn, but North Carolina is going down to the wire. Obama up 28,000 with 95% in!
Ooh, a message from Barack: "I'm about to head to Grant Park to talk to everyone gathered there, but I wanted to write to you first."
To me!!! first!
Since McManus isn't here to weep bitter tears at the rise of Whirly-Eyed Fascism and the dawning of Obama's boot grinding into a human face for eternity... I shall weep for him.
But I do love that Obama has a gaggle of opening acts warming the crowd up for his speech. Good showmanship.
Feh. Krauthammer on Fox: '...I don't think we've ever had a president in the White House....[long pause]... as untested and unknown as Barack Obama.'
Ok, so the R media ops have been setting up for the loss and are trying to play that for Obama to be a good president he must unite the country in an R agenda. So the election continues.... for four years.

['Well, I expected that.']
364- They should have taken the "please donate" off the bottom of the template first.
Prepare to hear a lot of "this is still a centre-right country."
366: also the boot is stomping on a human face forever.
I can't wait. I hope there are hobnails!
Obama is a Jonah Goldberg Fascist. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a daycare worker giving a toddler a bran muffin - forever. No boot.
Ehere are people wtching the goings on in grant park?
Wow, up in MT, IN, and NC now, JMM says MO may go Obama as well. Landslide, bitches!
Bruce Schneier href="http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/10/road-to-270-illinois.html">Silver from last week:
Jubilation if and when Obama wins the Presidency, culminating in a rally in Chicago's Grant Park that may draw one million souls. It's not a Cubs' World Championship, but most Illinoisans will take it; what kind of odds could you have gotten in 1908 that a black dude would get elected president before the Cubs won the Series again?

I think that we should take a pool on Krauthammer's head exploding. A recent column was phoned in from never-never land.
that doesn't help me. I need non-cable SF channels.
369- Andy Hiller, to his credit, said that this mean this is now a center-left country. Sadly he then started babbling about how Hillary is not celebrating tonight.
Justin "the English David Brooks" Webb just on Radio 4 sounding sooo out of it. Still thought his man stood a chance even yesterday.
Keep your eye on the Maine House of Representatives District 32 - http://bangornews.com/electionresults.html
Its a toss up seat. Katherine Cassidy is the Democrat. She's also my sister....
Shit, apparently we're now being ruled from Kenya. I guess I should have looked at the Obama fellow more closely.
Yeah, people are probably going apeshit in Kenya.
377: We're watching it on the internet - MSNBC is streaming.
Yeah, people are probably going apeshit in Kenya.
So, so racist.
It would actually be fun to have a talking heads clown show with Krauthammer, Brooks, Kristol, and Jonah Goldberg on the panel, and a sly moderator egging them on. You could probably keep the fake birth certificate alive for awhile.
I retract 378, now he's talking about Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. Get out of the 90s, dude.
On MSNBC they just showed Kenyans dancing in celebration. The African street!
imagine a daycare worker giving a toddler a bran muffin - forever.
Chilling.
365:I've been here, there, & everywhere all night.
I voted for Obama, as a continuation of 40 years of straight-ticket loyalty.
I just don't serve Obama.
Hmm, Prop 8 up by 13 points with 15% reporting, but I don't know what parts of CA have reported.
Okay, I'm bored. When's the next election? Is Italy having an election soon?
It would actually be fun to have a talking heads clown show with Krauthammer, Brooks, Kristol, and Jonah Goldberg on the panel, and a sly moderator egging them on.

Obama's supporters get kudos for the (albeit faint) applause in response to the comments about McCain.
394: Italy is *always* having an election soon.
394: New Zealand! This Saturday! Will be disappointing.
Holy shit, I am actually feeling proud to be an American.
Yeah, I was thinking about buying a flag to hang from the porch tomorrow. You know, like an American flag.
I just walked to the store to grab some beer. Some neighbors outside celebrating invited me in for absinthe, and then a corpse reviver. I feel a glow now that seems appropriate to the occasion, and hereby declare that I will make absinthe my number one drink during the Obama administration.
The neighborhood is elated. People are whooping and shouting, beeping car horns and shooting off fireworks. One man stepped onto his porch and sang "Obama" to the tune of "Volare". It's raining, but the mood is good.
And now the acceptance speech. I don't care what McManus says, I like this guy.
Everyone in my neighborhood is praying to Jesus for salvation. Too late, bitches.
I don't care what McManus says, I like this guy.
In his speech, Obama still feels it's necessary to kiss up to the party of war and torture and exploitation. The party of George W Bush. I think he is sincere. I don't much like him.
Yeah, I was thinking about buying a flag to hang from the porch tomorrow. You know, like an American flag.
Hey!! I think I have a flag in the basement. Came with the house. Hasn't flown since I've lived here. It will fly tomorrow.
You lost a bet, bob. Get the fuck out of here. And in case you're wondering, I'm completely serious -- like a heart attack.
The outstanding votes are on the balance in Franken-friendly areas. I think he'll pull it out. He's down 1%. Manana.
Brilliant speech though: sombre, humble, hopeful.
The wingnuts will go nuts.
I am fucking crying uncontrollable listening to a speech by a politician.
Brilliant speech though: sombre, humble, hopeful.
Agreed.
The speech was astonishing. But, I mean, expected. What strange, wonderful times.
Senate race called for Merkley in Oregon. One more, bitchez.
Slept for a bit and woke up in time to see Obama's speech. Fantastic. The 6 year old woke up in the middle of it for a pee and came and found me - told her to watch carefully and remember. She was more interested in how you make flags.
we need two more, and its not clear we will efen get one
Well, we got OR, and Minn is a draw. Georgia seems to be going to Chambliss and Alaska is just out, but I doubt Ted Stevens will win.
So, gonna miss by two seats, likely, unless Chambliss flips unexpectedly.

['It's the southern races that kept us from 60.']
Actually, I rather like the Electoral College.
Surprise, surprise, Tim Mahoney loses. Dick. I think that's the only R gain.
Tom Delay's seat goes back to being R too.
Also some guy in Louisiana beat the incumbent Dem.
Paul Kanjorski JUST BARELY hung on against celebrity racist mayor Lou Barletta. Kanjorski does not exactly have a lot of accomplishments for someone with 24 years in the House, and it would be no tragedy for him to lose, but not to that asshole.
The primary challenger split the Lousiana vote. Combined, the incumbent Dem and the challenger had about the same number as the Republicans.
Delurking, also, to say that it looks like Obama is taking North Carolina as well. That's where I'm from - I literally cannot believe it is happening, and it makes me want to cry, even though I'm sitting in a public place in another country where people are going to be very confused.
Nothing like watching the sun come up while the returns come in, though.
What election? Is there an election today?
I spent the whole day canvassing searching for someone who would say this. Didn't find them.
Great speech.
I literally cannot believe it is happening
This is great and sums up my reaction. A lot of friends went downtown to celebrate and hear a speech by our (pending recount?) new congressman, Perriello. I was tempted to walk the handful of blocks, but I'd rather just sit here and let it sink in. It's taking awhile.
I was at an election watch party for most of the evening. When they called the election for Obama, I just couldn't believe it -- it's been clear for a while now that an Obama victory was likely, but seeing it happen was incredible. Pennsylvania! Ohio! Virginia! Florida! I can't believe this is real.
And then I came home to check the ballot measures, and it turns out that Cal. Prop 8 is ahead in the polls. And, OK, this is real. America still sucks.
Or, I should say, California still sucks.* Virginia, Florida, and Ohio, you're still awesome in my book.
*Los Angeles County, why must you suck so very much? Big ups to Alameda and San Mateo, my old hometowns.
The vote on 8 is getting much tighter. Know hope. This seems to be the best coverage.
California's only half-reported, jms. Give them time before unleashing the full WTF, DOODZ.
424: Periello knows a few friends of mine. I kicked down to him early on. Was happy to see him up.
I'm also suspecting Obama's popular vote number to bump up a bit. Is this proud optimism?
Are we discussing prop 8 here or in the other thread? Anyway, a lot of the east bay, Santa Clara county, and LA have not reported yet.
suspecting s/b expecting
I blame wine...from California, no less!
So can an awake Californian tell me what makes Mono and Alpine Counties different from their surrounding counties with respect to the #9 vote?
I've been wondering the same thing, and I'm an awake Californian. Liberal employees of ski resorts? (Bear Valley, Mammoth, and a few others are in those counties, I think.)
Mono Lake is kind of a hippie enclave (as evidenced by all the Save Mono Lake bumper stickers you see around Berkeley).
The race seems to be ticking slowly towards NO on 8 with a lot of Bay-area counties still reporting.
What's the deal with LA County? They're only half in, too. And the initial numbers suggest a lot of people there. Presumably this is where L.A. is? Late-counting urban precincts? I know so little about you wacky Californians.
Mono Lake is boring. Oh, look, brine shrimp or whatever.
Unfogged is boring. Oh, look, ben w-lfs-n or whatever.
The whole Mono Lake, east side of the Sierras, 395 area is beautiful.
Lots of Alameda county is in and the LA numbers haven't been changing. Looks like the margins in the No counties aren't going to be big enough and prop 8 will win. But I was just reading that vote by mail counting could go on for days, so.
What election? Is there an election today?
I spent the whole day canvassing searching for someone who would say this. Didn't find them.
And at that spot PGD shall fix his Blackberry in the ground and make an offering to Poseidon.
