Supercrazywonderful, more like.
I have sung "Guantanamera" barefoot at Pete's feet. My friend Julie had hippie parents and made us took us to go see him. I was a big soppy hippie myself by the end.
Singing with Pete when I was 16 made me into a DFH too! That was 13 years ago, and he was already old then, his voice giving out, which is why they brought us in to sing with him and help him out. It's great to see him still performing, making little Commies out of everyone.
Ack, the video has been taken down and, as usual, I can't get Ben's file to play. I actually have a program that can play .ogg files now, but I think Ben as upgraded to a higher level of obscurity from which I am blocked. Perhaps the file knows I'm not using an open source operating system.
I think I was 12 when I saw Pete and Arlo at Wolftrap. Major life influence.
4: You can watch the entire concert on HBO's site.
Ok, I got ben's file to play, but its not Pete! I was hoping for Pete!
6: It was Pete. What did you do to Pete, helpy-chalk?
Guys, remember: Obama takes over *tomorrow*. For today, the forces of evil are still sabotaging our videos.
5: No wonder they're having youtube take down various videos.
At the bottom of the HBO launch page:
FOR THIS SPECIAL EVENT HBO HAS INVITED ITS TELEVISION SERVICE PROVIDERS TO MAKE THE CONCERT AVAILABLE FOR FREE TO ALL THEIR CUSTOMERS
But not youtube.
6: It was Pete
No, it wasn't. It was Martin Luther King, Jr., sermonizing, set to music (trombones and drums). You might look up the title of the post for more infos.
This land is their land. You really couldn't get a more vivid indicator of that than the HBO licensing of that particular performance of that particular song.
As always, cursing the darkness.
I have to admit that this is still just sinking in. Getting a monopoly on the inauguration was bad enough. Getting a monopoly on some ordinary group volunteering to sing some ordinary song (e.g. Fleetwood Mac at Clinton's inauguration) would be not too bad. But that particular song!
Yeah, I know. Art for art's sake. I'm imposing a political filter on poor old Obama and Pete and Bruce and Woody, who just want to make people happy. Always making an issue of everything.
Alternate link. Can't testify as to sound; I'm in a library.
11: The 2d link was before it got borked.
In the squares of the city, In the shadow of a steeple; By the relief office, I'd seen my people. As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking, Is this land made for you and me?
Ain't it funny that Pete has lived to see another Great Depression.
11: The 2d link was before it got borked.
Yeah, I know—I put the link there, after all.
Seriously, and less pissily, the audio at the first link really is fantastic.
16. Fucking hilarious, old mate. ROTFLMAO.
Yeah, the first link is worth installing an OGG player for.
