Sir Kraab
She adds, "People should e-mail me at mypseud at gee mail If they want my cell number. " For planning purposes, I'm guessing. But it is noted with interest that she didn't specify.
"Mineshafters" surely. Or maybe "Mein Shafters".
2: The former is what I had originally. But then I improved it, you see.
I'm not quite clear how we are gaining recognition of each other. So there's a bar - excuse me, lounge - and a restaurant?
Saturday, May 28th
I guess I'm still living in the past.
Guess so. May 28th is a Thursday this year.
Really wish I could have made it but I'm out of town due to family obligations this weekend. Have fun!
2: Comity on "Miners Shaft"? I think Standpipe would approve.
I should point out, St. Ex has both an upstairs and a downstairs area. They are a restaurant until later in the evening, so for a 7 pm meet-up, folks ought to congregate at the upstairs (i.e., ground floor) bar. Downstairs turns into a sort of dance party-type thing later in the evening. Fair warning, it'll be kinda crowded. There's whiskey back at my place if no one can hear each other.
Also, I will probably be there, if that wasn't obviously implicit in my last.
There's whiskey back at my place if no one can hear each other.
You heard it here first, folks. Conditional whiskey. GET LOUD!
I'm trying to establish the whiskey conditional as the new standard.
For reference purposes, I am pictured here. I leave it as an exercise for the reader to properly identify which one is me, and which is the muppet. I'm pretty sure I remember what eb looks like, though, so I'll try to snag him out of the crowd if I see him looking lost.
Yes, I'm fairly certain I can recognize you. I probably could recognize Sir Kraab from the first Unfoggedcon, but don't think I've (knowingly) met anyone else who's attending. I'm likely to look lost because that's just how I look when I'm looking for people in large crowds.
I look like this, but (usually) without the tiara.
I look like Sir Kraab, but with less HOPE in my eyes.
I shan't be there. So I shall lie and tell you I look rather like Harriet from Dykes To Watch Out For.
I'm going to a dance recital tonight. Not sure when it will let out but I'll zip right over. I'll come bearing fruit baskets.
Are you coming, Stanley?
20: I'll be at next week's shindig. Tonight I have a gig at what's increasingly appearing to be a high school prom. I'm only sorta kidding.
I look like Clark Kent. I'm only sorta kidding.
Look for a Mutombo sign. I'm not kidding at all.
23: Why on earth would you be? What I wonder is whether it'll be euphemized.
I've changed my mind. Actually I look like Lois.
Alright, I'm heading over to the bar. See y'all in a few.
You ain't gonna get none, dude.

Has anybody read the new biography of FDR's Labor Secretary, Frances Perkins? She sounds like a really interesting figure, and I was wondering whether it was any good. I heard the author interviewed on NPR and my 3rd google hit came up with a mixed review: saying basically that Perkins wasn't charismatic enough to hold one's attention through the details of the legislative process. That sounded unfair to me.
Right now. You're missing it. We're having a great time, too.
Sorry I had to miss out. Next time, I hope.
So it is Haw flakes. Another memory wrong.
The substance of the label is about what I remember, just with Haw instead of Hao.
Next time, I hope
Is there supposed to be a second meetup in early April, or was that nixed? That would be just next weekend, as it had been floated.
Sorry Ned. I'm leaving the Pittsburgh meetup to go to a party in Noe Valley. Shame, would have liked to have met you.
45: It really depends on when and where it is. I'd be taking public transportation to/from Baltimore, and train schedules returning are iffy late at night. I had thought the later meetup was cancelled, actually. April 3rd is the Friday - hrm, I'm not sure.
How are the cherry blossoms down there?
I didn't get downtown today -- saw buds on TV last night. We had such a downpour after that, it's a good thing they're not in bloom.
The buds around here are slightly downtrodden as well. The trees are loving the mist and rain, but it will take them a little time.
Meetup in two or three weeks then! For cherry blossoms! I'm not remembering whether there was a specific reason for the April 3rd date.
Robust McManlypants, Rah, teo, maybe others who aren't that close will be in town.
Ah. Got it.
They weren't able to make tonight's event (we would like a report on that, people! One hopes that that nobody took issue with togolosh's hat).

The targeted ads on my gmail account don't make me feel comfortable about my email privacy there. Just because I talk to someone in B.C. doesn't mean I want to be seeing ads for tastefully furnished 1 & 2 bedroom villas on Salt Spring Island. Thanks, though.

I adamantly misremembered the name of Haw flakes. Other than that, there were multiple Mutombo signs, we talked about various things, a couple of us caught the end of the Villanova-Pitt game playing on the tv in the background, and no hats were harmed. Although I later discovered gum from under a table stuck to my coat.
I did see someone at Gallery Place/Chinatown walking on the red line metro platform with a sort of top hat-like hat on - it wasn't quite as high as a top hat, but my hat vocabulary isn't strong enough to say what it was, aside from affected. He was going really slow and I wanted to knock the hat off his head, but I just walked around him.
This may just make up, in terms of story-telling, for watching the end of a sports game during a meet-up.
Sorry for the confusion, parsy. Meet up for next Friday 4/3 at Solly's, 7pm-???. I'll post a reminder as we get closer.
||
I fucking hate driving in the rain on 29 pulling a trailer.

Is Solly's going to have gum stuck under the table? I'll look it up. Stanley, no need to apologize; there was an earlier thread, after all.
Actually, the gum stuck under the table was at Solly's. A few of us went there after the first place.
57: Wait, so how was it? The lack of comments regarding tonight's actual meet-up is...curious.
See 50. I don't know what happened to everyone else. Although I assume the lurking attendee(s) will continue to lurk.
59: Oh. I read that as referring to some past meet-up for some reason. Ne'er ye mind!
Solly's has new tables, so I am somewhat concerned about the presence of gum underneath them already. Aside from that, it was an excellent meetup, which transitioned nicely into a nigh of drinking at solly's from which I am just now returning (via a detour at a friend's house) home. Good to meet (or re-meet, as the case may be) you all.
I'm not sure if my previous comment is entirely grammatical; read as properly edited.
wish I had been in town. I will be in NYC in July and probably DC also, hopefully we'll do some meet-up-inating then.
Sadly for you lot, everyone was quite well behaved.
BTW, it was nearly an all-male meetup, me and a lurker friend of mine being the only women among 7 (am I counting right?) men.
54: It was a good game.
At some future time it will have been a good game. Right now it is not..
It was good to have met you all. I wish I had been able to stay longer!
And Villanova SUCKS!

As a follow on to the Matt Taibbi article, I strongly recommend reading a piece by Simon Johnson (from Sloan and IMF) in The Atlantic discussing US financial situation in the context of a typical IMF engagement.
Via everyone.

Vinicius de Moraes, the big bossa nova lyricist ("Black Orpheus", etc.), started writing sambas when he was about 40 and working as a government functionary while writing highbrow poetry on the side. In physical appearance he resembled the honky plumber who lives down the street. (As I've already explained, the lovely, exotic Marpessa Dawn came from Pittsburgh. And I've already explained the lovely, exotic Rita Gam, too.)
I guess movies aren't real. I'd never thought of that.
All the other Viniciuses in Wiki (except the classic Romans) are Brazilian actors and athletes who were most likely named after de Moraes.

I'm on a list to get the book at our public library. Don't know about her charisma - do know the main Labor building in DC is named after her. Perkins was an alum of Mount Holyoke, where my daughter just got accepted. Whew! followed by Gulp! Private colleges are expensive. Anyhow, am interested in the book.

Vinicius de Moraes used to introduce himself as "poet and ex-diplomat" (he was at the Brazilian consulate in LA at one point) which is a great title. While Black Orpheus and his Bossa Nova work is awesome, the Afro-Sambas he did with Baden-Powell (named after the founder of the Boy Scouts, yes) are powerful and worth checking out.
I doubt very few of the Brazilian Viniciuses are named after him. While it's not exactly common, it isn't as exotic a name there as it would be here.
My most interesting takeaway from the night was that Sir Kraab and I were neighbors in my pre-unfogged days. Togolosh's hat was nothing compared to his stories of Botswana.
I had an out of town guest and then I got sick. But I want to come to the next one, though!
For what it's worth, Analia is a fairly common name in Brazil and Argentina too. Viz. Ms Zizek, whose parents are psychoanalysts like Mr. Z.
There weren't any Brazilian Viniciuses in Wiki born pre-bossa-nova.
I'll look up the Baden-Powell.

Lazy person that I am, I finally got around to filing my taxes. I should have done it earlier, since I'm getting a refund, and they're fairly simple, but at least it's still March.
Also, I just got these Clark's Unstructured mary janes at an outlet store in brown. They are the most comfortable shoes evar. As a public service announcement I want to tell you all that Clark's outlets give you a 20% discount for having a AAA card.

Hypothesis: Gum under the table is a direct result of DCs smoking ban. It's a twofold cause: First, the elimination of ashtrays removes the obvious place to put your gum, and second the inability to smoke indoors encourages smokers to chew gum in order to take the edge off.
Oh, and on the hat thing - The principle remains that it is absurd to require hats off indoors, up there with standing when a lady enters the room. In practice, however, it's probably a good idea to just doff the hat so you don't get stabbed in the eye with a fork by some outraged enforcer of obsolete social norms.
would have come to the st. ex meetup but went out of town at the last minute. looking forward to the friday one, though!
I am sorry that I couldnt make it.
I did get to have a fabulous time with AWB!
