Alrighty! Who's in Jerusalem?
..
sniff
I won't be there this time, but I'm putting you all on notice that I am planning to visit NYC Thanksgiving weekend. This should give you all plenty of time to think up plausible, polite excuses.
2: Woohoo! With or without Rory, and if with, can we figure out something fun we can do with the kids?
Is anyone else unfogged going to be in Montreal between the 3rd and the 13th of next month?
Without Rory, alas. She will be with dad, I will be hanging out with a friend I haven't seen in years -- who I feel pretty confident won't mind a meetup at all. Rory is dying to visit Broadway someday, though, so I'm sure we'll make that meetup happen eventually.
Well, drat. We'll have a meetup anyway, even without Rory, though.
Phew. For a second there I was afraid I wouldn't be cool enough without Rory.
9: What, like I would make stuff up? What kind of person do you take me for?
I am commenting from band practice and did not see that I was named in the OP. Hello!
To add yet another potential meetup to the mix, I'm thinking I'll probably be in Austin sometime in mid-August.
11 -- I'm thinking about Sheridan.
17: Great! That's the most beautiful time of year around hereparts! Keep us informed.
Just kidding about the "most beautiful time of year".
What's probably bringing you to Austin?
My aunt and uncle in Houston apparently want my car when I go off to grad school (God only knows why), so I'm driving it to them then flying to school from Houston.
22: Hell, we can have an Austin meet-up and a Houston meet-up!
Where are you going off to grad school again? I should probably just read your blog and not jam up this NYC meet-up thread with unrelated chatter, but what the hey.
Rutgers. I don't think I've actually mentioned it by name on my blog.
Well, congratulations! Also, Sir Kraab just chimed in to remind me to remind you that we have a spare, private apartment available that you'd be more than welcome to stay in during your sojourn in Austin.
Never underestimate the appeal of a man in uniform.
My first guess was something similar to LB's. But now I'm thinking that you're the man under discussion in the above bullet point? Feel free to spill . . .
Sir Kraab just chimed in to remind me to remind you that we have a spare, private apartment available that you'd be more than welcome to stay in during your sojourn in Austin.
That would be much appreciated; thank you. It would probably just be one night. I'll let you know more details when I figure out exactly what my plans are.
But now I'm thinking that you're the man under discussion in the above bullet point?
I am indeed.
I'll let you know more details when I figure out exactly what my plans are.
Cool. Now, to bed.
Have a great weekend everyone!
I too like details about Austin meet-ups.
This is probably a good time to mention that I'll be in Austin at some point later this summer. At the moment I'm shooting for the last week of the month, but I may have to push it back a bit.
How mid- is this August? I'll be in Austin from the 3rd to the 10th, before heading off to school.
Later than that. Probably the thirteenth or fourteenth.
I was musing last night about Unfogged house swaps. If anyone wants a holiday in a rather shabby house with lots of beds, in a dodgy town on the Thames between Oxford and London (and easy transport to the rest of the country), let me know.
34. Likewise, I'd offer a nice late Victorian town house in a quiet leafy street, convenient for the Peak District, the dukeries, York, etc. But we've got the builders in right now.
They dug the foundations yesterday and today it's raining like god forgot what he promised Noah. We should have a nice moat by now.
Maybe next year.
Huh. We've thought about this sort of thing, and have a two-bedroom apartment in an inconvenient part of Manhattan (close to an hour by public transport to anything a tourist would want to see) to offer. Of course, Buck hasn't been able to arrange for a week off work this century, so vacation planning is mostly moot.
So we've got Josh late July, Minivet early August, and then teo mid August. Austin is this season's hot spot for the Unfogged Set.
Shame that heebie found out about them so we'll have to invite her too now. Oh well.
I can offer a lovely Craftsman kit home with an ample garden and walking access to historic sites around scenic Charlottesville. Amenities also include a flood-prone basement, a homicidal bird-killing cat, and roommates who cook very well but might well be technically insane.
I can offer a very small shed (cabin) with no water, no sewer, no neighbors, no mail service, no landline, and easy walking distance to the national forest. Also nowhere near either Texas or NY. Possibility of homicidal cat killing birds (hawks and owls have been seen) and mammals (coyotes have been heard). Small pets welcome.
I am very much looking forward to this NYC meetup. The intensity of my enthusiasm may be due to having spent the last six days at a silent retreat. Don't worry; I should be over most of the weirdness by Monday.
40: I hope by then your ego has recovered to the point where you know your name. My partner just got back from a ten day silent retreat last week, but she again has an identity, although it may be illusion.
Huh. This shit's weirder than I thought.
We should have a nice moat by now.
I hear you can expense those!
If any of you Boston people are doing anything for the fourth that allows a random person, my brother is distressed that his plans have fallen apart. He's a relatively tame law student who enjoys both convention and Evil Dead. If you'd show him a good time I'd owe you one.
18 - Hey charleycarp, what exactly were you thinking about Sheridan?
I'm driving from DC to Missoula a week hence, and am thinking about how to break it into reasonable pieces. My current thinking is spending a night in Rapid, and so lunch in Sheridan, but I'll revise as we're underway, I think. Maybe take my son up to Story, talk about the Great Sioux War . . .
Specifically, William J. Fettermen, and death by mooning.
Anyone have good dinner recommendations convenient to Fresh Salt? Something moderately priced and including vegetarian options would be ideal.
49: There is an Italian place around the corner that's very good, but a bit expensive. This place is within walking distance and is so so good, but, again, sorta pricey. This is a favorite for me and Bave, and is just a few stops away--excellent vegan Chinese.
Yep. There are other pricey places right there on Front Street -- Stella Maris is definitely overpriced for what you get, but there's a kind of tapas place right next to FS that's quite good, if kinda spendy. How about Chinatown? New Green Bo is my favorite cheap place with amazing food. It's maybe 15 minutes walking from FS.
Also, Fresh Salt has food, including vegetarian. Nothing wildly exciting, but very decent bar food.
Yeah, mac and cheese, hummus plate, sandwich kinda stuff.
Are you guys doing this? I will try to roll by...
Anyone reading this from the meetup, work has turned a little uglier than I expected -- I'll try to get there around eight, maybe, if all goes well.
Early meet-up report: very lively group and well-attended; many salacious stories. I peeled myself away early for matters unrelated. Oh, and LB (whom I managed to insult within the first minute of her arrival—whoops!) can do a very convincing Irish brogue.
57 was highly inappropriate, and I apologize. Indeed, the meetup was fairly salacious.
59: Bave experienced peer pressure. It was what it was.
I was the only person who left the meetup without being insanely intoxicated, to my knowledge. I would like for that to go on record somewhere. AWB exercised restraint on 7/6/09.
I did, however, dictate 57. I am not sorry.
I'll certainly shine the "I'm in NYC" bat signal next time that happens, but apparently you all are falling over yourselves to meet up. Do so for whatever reason!
Ah man, I should have gone tonight.
Note that starting about a month from now I will be in close proximity to NYC for at least two years. There will be plenty of pretexts for meetups.
I will be far from almost everyone who comments regularly from known locations. There will be no pretexts for meetups. Genuine reasons for meetups may occur.
61: Hmphf. I was sanely intoxicated when I left, thank you very much.
67: Yeah, I was sanely intoxicated, too. Made it back to Park Slope in an astonishing twenty minutes (A train to the F train). Dumb Sanely intoxicated luck, I guess.
