I wish I wasn't teaching during the show. Maybe I'll just use it as a soundtrack.
some guy from metafilter
Is it that guy who did the Halle-hula track (plus numerous other excellent things)?
"Joran Dax left her with an appreciation for music, even though no one in her family had any musical ability, and after re-integrating Joran's personality she regularly practiced playing music herself."
Am I embarrassed that I recognized the reference in 4? No I am not.
Is it that guy who did the Halle-hula track (plus numerous other excellent things)?
That guy, but not that track.
Rah: Daxophone.
microtones from Boston
I like those.
I'm not even going to bother inquiring about the likelihood of a recorded version after the fact.
Oh me of little faith! The instrument whose existence I failed to credit looks fascinating...
In a band, just in case you were wondering. In Canada.
Quite! Previously.
I'm on the verge of death from fatigue over here. Downing a big cup of coffee has only made me simultaneously wired and tired. Bad!
Try not to zone out.
I liked this cover too. "Metafilter Music" is a good choice for the label field.
Downing a big cup of coffee has only made me simultaneously wired and tired.
I hate this phenomenon. And I should bike home now so I can actually catch the rest of the show (class got out unexpectedly early).
neb was very excited about the PSA. I was laughing (out loud even).
I would have said more dramatic than excited. Either way, more energized than I would have expected.
There's a good reason for that, which is that I meant to do something else but the board wasn't responding and I felt I had retroactively to make the intervening bit of silence fit.
Hmm, perhaps I should have biked a little slower and missed this one.
:(
The next set has a fantastic Italian lament!
I have a poor attention span for instrumentals. Not your fault!
Maybe I should ask here: if a landlord asks for a deposit through PayPal, should I be suspicious? I've only used PayPal once or twice, a few years ago.
23: Agree. I liked the one before this, however. A rare chance to listen for 30 minutes or so for me.
26: I wish I knew the answer. Is this ahead of time? Do you have a legally binding contract in place already? Any way of getting a sense of trustworthiness?
28: Ahead of time. I'll be arriving next week. Right now, one potential landlord has asked for a wire transfer, which I've declined to do and I've become suspicious enough that I might just turn down the room even if there's no deposit (since not having a place at all is still a cost).
Another landlord seems to be trying to run things like a hotel without the resources. Hence the PayPal.
I'm thinking I should just spring for a hotel and deal with everything in person. This is all cross-border, just to add to the degree of difficulty.
But what could happen? It's a secure site, and it gives you a record of the transaction.
Paypal charge substantial fees. I can't see why anyone would prefer that over a normal cheque or cash. I'd be suspicious, too.
I wanted to say something about neb's lamentable taste, but this is kind of awesome.
He'll probably just turn around and blow it on kitschy decor on eBay.
Once the landlord has your money, getting it back could be a pain.
You can tell because the first word of the title is "lamento".
38: especially via PayPal, which isn't well known for its protections.
Yes, I've had to claim back money via Paypal. It took ages, and I didn't get the full amount.
Yes, the lament is definitely cool.
lamento.
Sure, after I had Google translate it for me.
But when the alternative is sending a check? Then there's no third party to help you demand your money back -- you're purely at the mercy of the landlord.
My cat is singing along, which is less cool.
I can't see why anyone would prefer that over a normal cheque or cash.
In this case, it's partly a currency issue. Which is why I'm beginning to think I should just hold off on dealing with landlords until I get there. I probably look like a scammer too, contacting people from outside the country.
49: Whatever you do, it's important remember that these people like bears. And I mean, they really like bears. Or so I've been told.
45: That's sort of what I'm wondering about. Whether PayPal is more like a check, when the money's not quite gone - theoretically, you can stop payment if they don't cash it immediately, though that isn't always what happens - or if it's more like wire transfers and the like when your money is just gone.
What language is this? French with an accent?
I am so, so bad with sung languages. Half the time English sounds like something else. I know the diction doesn't change that much, and yet.
51: Paypal has various options, including something that's like an electronic check, which I think you cancel preclearance.
33: I love it when people pay me for things on Paypal (which happens because sometimes I sell things I make on etsy), because I don't budget it, and it's like I have a fund of money that's a secret from the rest of my money. Then I can blow it all on kitschy decor on eBay.
Croatian.
So, definitely not French with an accent. I was making up lyrics that didn't even exist, but they were sort of fun. Something about needing to tell him something. Direz-moi!
Direz-moi!
I think this hurts me more than Di's use of "alot".
Hee. I know it is incorrect, if that helps. It was what I was hearing when I thought maybe it was French.
57.2: Yeah, I had a $100 rebate on PayPal recently and it was like a secret personal Xmas. 1958 Rand McNally Road Atlas? Sure. Some used books I kinda sorta maybe wanted? Sure.
'splain please
Now I'm insecure about it, but I'm assuming Josh's complaint is that an informal command like that would more likely be Dit moi. Or maybe it's about the hyphen. It's been a long time since I took French.
I am glad people like some of what I am playing.
Yes, this set is shaping up to be quite excellent.
I started too late to hear the Croatian, but I've been liking the last few songs.
I like this one considerably more than the previous two.
Oh, I just conjugated really badly.
Poor Josh. That was really bad. Sorry! (Took me way too long to figure out the mistake, too.)
Well, it's better than declining really badly.
Multiple times, I conjugated badly. Oh, I hang my head in shame.
62: It had a bit of Ye Olde Prog Rock* feel. "Lamento" reminded me a bit of my favorite item found via neb's show, "Annihilation in Allah" from Henry Kaiser and Richard Thompson (plus gateway drug to more Kaiser).
*As did the recnt Decemberists show, which I was entranced by and highly recommend. Especially liked the first half when they did a semi-theatrical run through of "Hazards of Love" (and which CD I am now captivated by). The two female vocalists complemented the band well--prog but
with wimyns!
65-68: This is the "accessible" set.
76: Surely. "An" accessible set.
(Fair housing) counselors, or fair (housing counselors)?
The PSA text is ambiguous. Also, I can't believe I just said that.
The PSA text is ambiguous.
There was some faulty parallelism in it too.
Who is the fairest housing counselor of them all?
82: The rough spoken (and written) among us are winning. Disengage or be forever damaged.
83, see 80. I was distracted by having become aware of my dry-mouthedness, or anyway that's my story.
The Unfogged server's time seems to be ten minutes off from the closest existing time zone.
87: Actually, no, I noticed it yesterday.
I say the most ridiculous things while teaching, phrases that otherwise I have never uttered.* I think it just happens when you're talking in front of groups, until you learn to master yourself.
*For me, it's really outdated - I mean, 1950s outdated - slang and repetitive stock phrases. For every one I eliminate, another pops up.
It appears that it is not uncommon for people to pay rent/deposits on PayPal, for people to be scammed (or claim that a scam is on offer) for deposits through PayPal, and for people to ask in online forums whether they are going to be scammed for a deposit on PayPal. I think I might take the risk for a better deal, but if I'm going to get scammed, I'd like it to be for a better apartment.
*For me, it's really outdated - I mean, 1950s outdated - slang and repetitive stock phrases. For every one I eliminate, another pops up.
Eggs in the coffee.
I'll scam you out of a real nice apartment, eb.
94: "Is there parking? This apartment has a whole bridge for you to park on, toll booth security and everything."
1950s outdated slang
"All right, Daddy-O, you better cut the gas. You and your duck butt got me pretty well frosted here."
93, 97: More along the lines of golly gee, sadly.
The album Lower Lurum is really fantastic; guitar & daxophone duets. Reichel is also a luthier who's made some fairly unusual guitars.
there was 15 min time lag between i read 95 and started listening to the actual song
but the comment appears instantly
have to wait for the adxophone 15 min perhaps
I like this set, too. This song in particular, but it has all been enjoyable.
Just don't make it too accessible, or just any old person will start accessing it, and then we'll need rationing.
And without seeing it, I confirmed the bit about "accessible." I'm such a philistine.
I believe that everyone should have access to high-quality music.
Truly inaccessible music would be in Croatan, not Croatian.
Truly inaccessible music would be hidden somewhere remote in the Himalayas.
Truly inaccessible music would be beyond or below detection by human hearing.
This must be the love song from Iraq.
The visible sign of an invisible order!
113: Like an elephant choir.
maa, now the comments have stopped appearing for some time
my guess was the mandolin like sounds were the daxophone, not the stringy ones and voices
ljudi perhaps means people what i can guess from Croatian
i missed the first 30 min of the show coz was sleeping, but there were promises of the recordings iiuc, so i didn't miss the Portugal and Iraqi music i hope
what was in the U mixes, Blue crane, so i'm familiar with its melody people like more what is familiar at least regarding music perhaps, but i liked many others of the show too
now it is the Iraqi song perhaps sounds Arabic
Wow, that was unexpected. But fun!
but my comment appears intanstly, i think the internet connection works in some pulses or what, not like continuous streamingly

Hmm. The landlord who asked for the wire transfer is ok with me not being willing to do that. So I guess I'm going to show up and see what happens. There's a real address and (presumably real) phone number, at least.
|>
You could call the phone number to confirm its reality.
There goes jms being all logical again.
I will at some point. I was expecting the landlord to disappear, though.
i recalled i was told the first payment is free first month something
back the first year i came there, so i paid 300 as just the contract's security deposit which i supposed to get back when i'll move in, aside from the apartment's security deposit
but then i happened to read on the internets that in the nearby park, branch brook's, there was found a corpse and i changed my mind and lost that 300 coz they said i already signed the contract, never stepped into the place and already lost money :(
I conjugated badly
I had a boss many years ago who believed conjugate was the verb for what you do on a conjugal visit. Quite the moment when, in proofreading a draft, I complained that I conjugated badly...
I was invited on a conjugal visit, but I declined.
I was neglectful above in mentioning the brown note without linking this.
106: See, this is an accessible set.
And yet I had no access.
I made a recording, but the sound quality is shit for some reason—it wasn't clipping excessively but it sounds awful. I must have used the wrong source? I'm putting it up anyway (won't be fully uploaded for a bit).
re 8: sorry to hear of your passing, Joe.
