I learned the math version before the Freud version, and maybe that's given me the wrong idea, but I don't think of Freud's version of "over-determined" as being a good thing. I think one of the things it can describe is some piece of behaviour that you would like to think has one explanation, which is at least partly valid, but for which there is also some other reason which you'd like to ignore.
